Match Trivia

The first of the League charity matches took place on Celtic Park, before a large crowd. The Rangers were fortunate in winning the toss, and played with the wind at their backs. The ball had not been long kicked off before the Rangers were making dangerous shapes for the Dumbarton goal, but Barr used his foot well, and cleared his lines. It was some little time before the teams got going, but from the beginning there were signs of a good game. Dumbarton kept the ball pretty well in the Rangers territory, but the defence of the ‘light blues’ was exceedingly good. Dumbarton was certainly making themselves felt, when a foul brought relief to the Rangers, and McPherson instituted a good run, but only to be brought up short by the Dumbarton halves. Miller then took the ball up the left, but Gow caught his pass and spoiled it. Dumbarton were doing all the hard work so far, though the Rangers were taking some fine runs, and as a result of one of these, Allan sent in a splendid shot, which struck the bar. Some very hard play followed, and Dumbarton took the ball right up the field, but after getting the better of Gow, one of the forwards sent it over the lines. Coming back again, Miller had a splendid chance to score, but sent the ball over the bar. At the other end the Rangers were frustrated by Boyle, who was playing a magnificent game at centre half. The ball was travelling quickly from end to end, and some fine and exciting play was being displayed. One or two severe scrimmages took place round the Rangers goal after a corner kick, but the Dumbarton men could not get the ball through, though they certainly were playing to score, and in quite an improve style to the last occasion on which they played the Rangers. The Light Blues made poor use of the chances they got, and so far did little else than send the ball high over the bar, when they tried to shoot. Twice in succession the Rangers goal had a narrow escape from well-directed shots by McMillan and Galbraith, but it came at last from the foot of Taylor, who scored for Dumbarton after half an hour’s determined play. A corner to the Rangers gave them a chance to equalise, but the ball was cleared away, and at halftime the score stood – Dumbarton 1 goal: Rangers 0. Dumbarton started the second half by dashing down on goal, and Reid has just time to save. A foul near the Dumbarton goal looked bad for the Sons of the Rock, but the ball ultimately went over the lines. Dumbarton were back at the Rangers goal in a twinkling, and Reid got another stiff shot to save, but he fold the ball gallantly, although jostled by three Dumbarton men, and cleverly averted the downfall of his goal. Galbraith had another try, and his shot was a few inches too high. The Rangers made some little progress up the field, but a free kick gave Dumbarton relief. From another free kick, Leitch Keir placed the ball so well that it went through goal, but did not touch any of the players. At this stage of the game some of the players on each side got somewhat excited, but fouls were promptly awarded for any shady lay. A corner to Dumbarton was well placed, and Boyle neatly landed the ball in, but it went over the bar. Another corner followed, but the ball went past. After a large number of throws in the Dumbarton end, Miller took a splendid run down the left, and finished up with a magnificent shot, which just struck the bar. The Rangers form all through was very disappointing, while Dumbarton on the other hand improved greatly, and played a hard and effective game throughout, and as a consequence the greater part of the play was in their favour. The play however was by no means of a brilliant order, and the fact that the players lost their tempers on several occasions was to blame for this. In the last stages of the game McPherson (Rangers) and McMillan (of Dumbarton) disagreed on the field, and the referee exercised his authority and made them leave the field. Both teams continued to play hard till the close, but no further scoring was recorded, and the game ended – Dumbarton 1 goal: Rangers 0 goals
