Match Trivia
Though the wind was high and very cold about four thousand persons turned out at Hampden Park to witness the tie between the Rangers and Dumbarton for the Glasgow Charity Cup. Dumbarton had their full team the only change being that Wilson the reserve half back, took the place of Liddell, forward. The Rangers losing the toss kicked off, but soon the ball was carried towards their goal, which made several narrow escapes. Eventually in ten minutes from the start McKinnon headed the ball through the Rangers goal. The light blues after the kick off made a splendid raid, which resulted in a corner, but no advantage was gained and they were once more subjected to a strong pressure, which ended in Pringle sending the leather through his own goal. No more was done during the next quarter of an hour, the score standing at halftime – Dumbarton 2 goals Rangers none. On resuming play the Rangers had the advantage of the wind but fifteen minutes elapsed before they registered their first goal, the ball quietly rolling between the posts, McAulay failing to catch it with his foot. Dumbarton now made several attacks but a kick by each of the Rangers backs carried the ball down to the stranger’s territory. Half an hour from halftime Heggie by a long smart shot scored No.2 goal for the Glasgow players thus equalising the score. This success was hailed with great enthusiasm by the supporters of the light blues who were cheered on to do more. In fact it was thought that Dumbarton would leave the field defeated, but the defence was so good that nothing more was done and the match ended in a draw – two goals each. This result is very satisfactory for charity as the gate must be enormous when these crack clubs meet again.
