Match Trivia

These two clubs met for the first time this season at Ibrox Park, but their friends did not show interest in the match and made a comparatively poor turnout, only about 1000 spectators being present. Cowlairs won the toss, and took the eastern goal with the wind in their favour. They carried the ball well into the Rangers territory, but the home men forced them back, and following a fine run up on the right wing a corner was gained. This in itself was unproductive, but the ball found its way to Wyllie, who scored the first goal about five minutes from the start. A few minutes later Wyllie again distinguished himself, and made the Rangers stand 2 to 0. For a little Cowlairs kept their rivals on the defensive, but the Rangers again broke away, and showed some dangerous but ineffective play before the stranger’s goal. Cowlairs were not making a good appearance. However they managed to get in the vicinity of the western goal, and 25 minutes from the start John McPherson scored their first point. Some slow work for both sides followed until a good run up by the Rangers right wing made things look livelier. This was the beginning of clever give-and-take play, the feature of which was the passing of the home men. Cowlairs pulled themselves together and took a goal, which was disallowed as off-side. Then the Rangers went to the other end, and Johnstone gave them a third goal. ‘Off-side’ was claimed, but disallowed, and the point stood. Halftime whistle blew with the ball in midfield, and the score – Rangers 3 Cowlairs 1. On charge of ends the Rangers, now playing with the wind, made a capital appearance, and Johnstone made their fourth goal. Quite suddenly the character of the game changed. McInnes, for the visitors took the second goal very cleverly. The Rangers took the ball into Cowlairs territory, and though it did not look particularly threatening, the Cowlairs goalkeeper thought fir to leave his posts, and tackle an opposing forward. As a consequence, the ball was passed beyond him, and before he could return to the place he should never have left Wyllie shot a fifth goal for the Rangers. Time ended – Rangers 5 goals, Cowlairs 2 goals
