Match Trivia

Rangers defeated Cowdenbeath at Ibrox yesterday by four goals to one. The score suggests that a wide margin separated the teams in general ability. Not so. In fact, there were frequent periods when the ultimate victors were outplayed by a team of grafters. Cowden did not deserve to finish three goals behind the Rangers. The standard to play deteriorated after each side had scored once, and until the last kick there was a tale of schemes mismanaged chances thrown to the winds, with occasional bright spells of smart work. The opening goal were good. Cowdenbeath scored first, Leonard collecting the ball from Pullar and shooting into the net. Alan Morton replied with a beauty. He took a long pass from Cunningham and squeezes a hard drive inside the post. Following this, Cowdenbeath had the balance of play, but it was Rangers who went ahead. Fleming was the marksman. The second half saw Rangers increase their lead through Morton and craig. The latter’s goal was from a free kick just inside the touch line. The quality of football served up was unworthy of the contestants. Cowdenbeath were the better ball manipulators. The team swung most smoothly when Chambers and Rankin took situations in hand. These two were the finest players on view. Cowden’s defence was sound and developed better understanding than that of Rangers. One mistake they made. Alan Morton was frequently left in a glaringly open position. Cunningham saw to it that full advantage was made of this tactical error. Hopewell, I thought the better Cowden back. In the half-back line Chambers and Forrest were outstanding. Forward no man failed, but luck was not with them. Leonard is a worrying, strong-shooting centre. Pullar and Rankin combined to make a subtle and dangerous wing. Rangers’ star were few. Hamilton distinguished himself once or twice, and McCandless gave him better support than Manderson. At half-back Shaw was the only man to merit praise. That the attack could not get going was due in no small measure to the little support afforded by the half-backs. Cunningham and Cairns tried hard but had to fetch and carry too often to allow of Marshall getting proper purveying
