Match Trivia
Cowdenbeath should have been able to make a better job of this, but they seemed, after the first goal, to feel they were outclassed. Even so, they could have made more of it by taking the most out of themselves, swinging the ball, and going full stream all the time. Easy to say it, no doubt easier than doing it. The positional play of the Rangers half-backs and backs was too good for the game the Fifers played, and that about sums the thing up. When chances came the way of the Cowdenbeath forwards they were usually too nervy to accept them. Frame was even guilty of failing at a penalty-kick given when the ball bounced, and Gray got it with his hand. It was difficult to say whether the handling was intentional or not. There was no more entertaining feature then the easy, genteel way Brown ambled through the game. He made everything seem absurdly simple, but when it was necessary, he could always produce the bit of energetic effort. It was half-back play par excellence. Meiklejohn was a sixth forward, and as the front line could get going at times with puzzling rounds of passing, it was little wonder Johnstone and Russell had to yield. Edwards made some fine saves, and was at fault only with the fifth goal, though here Meiklejohns shot caused the ball to do a fancy trick which sort of flabbergasted the custodian. Cowdens forwards were clever enough on the ball, but they held it too long. Frame tried hard to force the game but could not get a full response. Tom Hamilton had not much to do, but he made one grand save from Venters just previous to the penalty. Gray was right on his game, and Bob Hamilton was reliable all through. Simpson made only one mistake, and that was when he failed to head away the ball and gave McKennan his scoring chance. Rangers forwards played some real food stuff, with the incomers, Archibald and Morton, well among it. The scoring Meiklejohn began it after 18 minutes, from a free0kick, the ball deflecting off a defender. Then Frame missed the penalty, and before the interval English score twice the first from what I thought an offside position and Marshall got a fourth with a great left-foot shot. With 29 minutes of the second half gone, Meiklejohn shot a fifth, and then McKennan snapped his chance to beat Tom Hamilton, doing it well and truly. Marshall collected the sixth. Frame missed a first-half penalty
