Match Trivia

Glasgow Dental Cup Semi-Final - Rangers weren’t flattered by their six-goals victory over Clyde in the Dental Cup semi-final tie at Ibrox yesterday. With the exception of the first 15 minutes, Clyde were simply outclassed. During that early period the Shawfield might have counted twice, Simpson and Borland missed two fine chances. Alan Morton scored in 16 minutes with a lovely right-foot drive and two minutes later, after a corkscrew run, he scored a second. From this onward there was only one team in it. With the Clyde the trouble was that they seemed to realise this, and played in, what I thought was, a half-hearted manner – some of them anyway. Marshall came along with the third goal in the 28th minute, and 12 minutes later, from a pass from Cunningham. Marshall again obliged, making the total four. After change of ends, McMillan from a Morton cross, scored Rangers’ fifth goal, and Archibald, ten minutes later, got the sixth with a terrific drive. Rangers’ superiority lay in the fine understanding between half-backs and forwards. Alan Morton and Cunningham were themselves. Simpson was a splendid half-back and has come on a lot since I last saw him. I am pleased to know that the injury Meiklejohn received is not serious. His retiral made really no difference to the game. McDonald tackled nippily and passed with judgment, but he could do with a little speeding up. Fraser had no chance with the goals scored against him. He saved well. Maguire, Summers and Liddell were the best of the others. McAllister, the Churches League boy, made a promising debut. The attendance was disappointing, but – it was a cold day.
