Match Trivia
This was a vastly different Clyde from the Glasgow Cup final derelicts. They played like a team who thought they could win, and there were times when it looked as if they might do it. But Rangers forwards played a stronger game, did by far the greater amount of aggressive work, and often beat themselves by bunching hopelessly near goal. For all that, they brought out some grand saving by Stevenson, especially in the second half, and I will say in praise of the custodian that he had no chance at all with the two shots and a header by Smith that beat him. The whole Shawfield defence came out of the game with credit. Every man was full of beans neither fright nor funk troubled them. Smith went into it full steam, got a few words from the crowd, but was a clinking good man for his team. The forwards could give the Ibrox defence many moments of anxiety, but for once Boyd did not take his chances, and that made all the difference. He should have opened the scoring when only Dawson was left to beat, but I give him credit for trying to place the ball away from the goalkeeper. McCulloch was a tricky winger, and his goal was as good as any, but the right wing was too spasmodic, although clever at times. Dawson was a spectator for spells but could never afford to go to sleep. Both Gray and McDonald had their work cut out, but they were splendid backs. Simpson was not stating at home, as he is said to do, but was often away up the field forcing the play. For close constructive methods Meiklejohn and Brown were tip-top. On the left, Rangers were stronger forward. It was from the work of McPhail and Main that Smith got his chance to score the only goal of the first half after 18 minutes. McCullochs equaliser, two minutes after the restart, was grandly done, and though Smith scored again seven minutes later, Rangers were kept on edge until the same Smith headed the third goal from Archibalds short centre half-a-minute from the end
