Match Trivia
Now, dont be deceived. What I am going to tell you about the match at Ibrox is not all mine. The linesman on the Press vox side was a kindly gentleman and helped us with the scorers in the first half. Then, the crowd was of great assistance, because those two were in a position to see the ball sent up a shout when anything good was being performed. Yes, the fog was bad. But Referee Craigmyle could follow the play, and the plyers seemed to be enjoying things, for they let themselves go, and there was hurrying and scurrying of while and blue shirts simply discerned. Rangers, it was plain, were top dogs. Their forwards were ratting into the Clyde defence with any amount of verve. And through Ross was getting cheers from behind the goal, he had to pick the ball out of the net 14 minutes after the start. Marshall shouted the kindly linesman to the puzzled reporters and down went James as scorer number one. But we could see McGowan score the second goal ten minutes later, and McPhail the third seven minutes from the interval. It was easy to tell that the first half had been pretty nearly all Rangers, but Clyde were bent on putting a better face on things when they turned round. Their forwards got busy on the left wing, and for something we couldnt see, a penalty was awarded. Borland took it, but he shot wide. It was a costly miss, for the Rangers left wing set off on a puzzling inter-passing run, and McPhail finished it with a fourth goal. Mortons final pass to his partner was nicely done. The fifth goal was Flemings, but McGowan did some of the leading-in. Then Lowe took a bit between his teeth, went away on a run which took him past Brown and Hamilton. He made good position and passed to the waiting Smith, who shot accurately out of Tom Hamiltons reach a nicely-worked goal. Almost simultaneously M Smith, Clydes left back, was assisted off injured, but Ross stood between Rangers and an addition to the score. Rangers were easily the superior team. Clyde disappointed. The winners played well together, the star turn being the left wing work of Brown, McPhail and Morton. McGowan was always up, and Marshall and Fleming played better together than in their previous match. Clydes forwards could not get properly together, and the result was an easy time for the Rangers defence. Ross was the great man on the Shawfield side, and he had good help from his backs so long as Smith was there. The half-backs were nearly always struggling to hold the Ibrox attack. Borland missed a 48th minute penalty
