Match Trivia
This was a rather peculiar match to give the Rangers the championship, because both teams had to make important changes, but it gave some of the young Rangers the chance of asking the older one: “Who won the flag for you?” Well, there you are, facts speak for themselves. Rangers showed the superior team play, but there was a stuffy, fighting spirit about the Clyde defence that made goals difficult to get. Muirhead’s very cleverly-taken goal five minutes after the start was the only one of the first half. The second goal was headed by Marshall four minutes after the restart, and it was Muirhead who lobbed the ball to him after Nicholson had perfectly placed a corner-kick. The last goal was delayed until the last minute. Marshall, tearing through with the ball at his feet, was brought down, and converted the penalty-kick. With Blair, Gibson and Rankin absent the Clyde team deserves credit for a plucky fight. Stevenson was something of a hero. He had one particular save from Marshall in the second half which was worth the money. Both Carswell and Smith stuck into their job like men, and so did the half-backs. Summers allowed Fleming little scope. Borland and King played some nice football, but they found the positional tactics of the Rangers rear-men a puzzle. In fact, the covering up by the Ibrox half-backs left scarcely a loophole. Gray and R Hamilton were steady and sure, and both kicked a clean, long ball. The Rangers’ forwards stuck to a close game most of the time, and it was not the most paying game. Marshall was strong in forcing the play, and he and Nicholson had some bonnie bouts of passing
