Match Trivia

Close on 10,000 spectators patronised the match at Ibrox Park, where the Clyde appeared for the fourth time within fifteen day. What should have been a fast and interesting game was completely spoiled by the westerly gale which swept the field. Control of the ball was certainly most difficult, and neither team seemed to fully realise that the only chance of retaining some command over it was to keep it on the ground. Once in the air there was simply no gauging of its flight, and the cantrips the wind played, while they told on the quality of the football, afforded the onlookers no little amusement. Ales Smith, in taking a corner, had to go after the ball and replace it for the fifth time, and even then it was beginning to move off again when he got in his kick. Booth in taking a corner-flag kick for the Clyde, seemed quite astounded when he saw a ball which he had directed well up the field getting blown past before it got across the goal. It was largely a case of the side with the wind pressing and the other defending, although there were occasionally clever attempts to lead out in the teeth of the gale, but seldom with much success. Rangers were on the attack in the first half, and the manner in which Gordon, ten minutes from the start got the only goal of the match with a magnificent shot from about twenty yards out, seemed to indicate that they were going to make good use of the elements. The only other troublesome shot, however, McTurk got was a hard drive by the some Ibrox player, which with difficulty he saved low down at the corner of the post. To cross over against such a wind with only one goal of a lead was not too reassuring for the Rangers, but this small margin proved sufficient to earn them full points and maintain unbroken their undefeated home record for the season. Lock in the closing period was tested rather more than McTurk had been, excellent tries by McCartney and Sharp bringing him to his knees. The Cup finalists experienced the same difficulty as the Light Blues, finding it almost impossible to work the ball within decent shooting distance without the frolicsome wind chipping in to upset their calculations. About a quarter of an hour from the finish Robertson, the Shawfield left half, got injured and had to leave the field, while Bennett close on time, got a knock on the ankle which caused his retrial. The Clyde had hard luck in not obtaining the equaliser in the last minute, when a fine long shot by Chalmers, which had Lock beaten took the crossbar and rebounded into play. Each side had a new man on view, the Rangers including their latest capture Hendry, late of Morton at left-haft, and the visitors playing Sharp (Kilbirnie Ladeside) as partner to Booth. The recruits both did well, Hendry in the second half particularly playing a sterling game alike in tackling and placing. The Clyde were without McAteer, who is suffering from influenza, but Blair made a good substitute, and had a big say in keeping the Rangers out in the first half. Stirling reappeared on the right and played very well, but the best forward on the losing side was Booth, whom Galt and Law found very tricky and difficult to hols. Watson and Gilligan were safe at back. For the Rangers Reid was not so alert in the centre as usual, and lost one or two good chances. Gordon was the best shot on the field, and had some fine combined runs with Bennett. The partnership of Yuille and Smith was very effective in the opening period, but the younger player deteriorated after the interval. Stark played a very judicious game in the middle line, while Law and Campbell, if rather wild in their kicking at times, proved very difficult to get past
