Match Trivia
Played at Ibrox before 10,000 spectators. Celtic won the toss, and Hamilton kicked off against a strong wind, and for a time the Celts had the better of the play, but they could not get through. The Rangers showed good combination, and after some ding-dong play, Hamilton beat Forbes, but he was given offside. The Celts then took the game in hand in going strongly. They rushed down on Dickie and after some give and take play, Campbell scored for the Celts. The Rangers worked hard to get the equaliser. The Celts aided by the wind, had more frequent rushes on goal, and from a corner, taken by Somers, McMahon headed through a second point. A breakaway by the Celts right pair was converted by Campbell, the ball bounding off the post and going into the net. The Rangers never showed a sign of funk, and pegged away as though they were on the lead, and near the close of the first half McPherson got on, and with a clever low shot, he beat Forbes and opened the scoring for the Rangers. Halftime score – Celtic 3: Rangers 1. After an unusually long interval, the game was resumed, and the Rangers at once assumed the offensive, Forbes being called on to save. He cleared but, the Rangers kept up the pressure, and Doyle, when hard pressed gave away a corner, and from this A Smith scored from a pass by Crawford. A rush by Hamilton after several obstacles had been overcome was neatly taken advantage of, and Forbes was again beaten. With the scored even, play became very fast, but the Rangers showed the better combination, and but for the stubborn defence offered by Doyle and Welford they ought to have scored. The Rangers worked well together, but their shooting was very weak, and the Celts defence had little difficulty in testing them at any time. McMahon was a great improvement on the form shown on Thursday night, and had he been well supported he would have been very dangerous, as he was going in great form. The Celts were not frequently on the offensive, but when they got away they were always dangerous. The game continued in favour of the Rangers who forwards the close scored the fourth and winning goal. Result – Rangers 4 goals: Celtic 3 goals.
