Neilly Gibson Benefit Match Excellent weather favoured the meeting of the Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Park last night for the benefit of Neil Gibson, who has played halfback for the Ibrox club for many years. There was a fair attendance. Facing a strong sun Celtic kicked off, and for the first ten minutes play was confined to the centre of the field, with occasional incursions by both sets of forwards into their opponenets territory, without material result. Gradually the Rangers assumed the upper hand, and Adams had to deal with shots from Robertson, Kyle and Smith. At the other end McLean sent in pretty cross, but the pass went a begging. Neither team was taking matters seriously, but play was at times relieved by individual incidents a pretty shot by Start and a brilliant dash by A Smith being prominent features. Close to halftime Bennett, who had been playing effectively, was injured and had to retire. Just as the Celtic had got two corners in succession halftime was sounded without a goal being scored. On the resumption of the game, Rangers with a rearranged front rank – Mackie going to centre, Robertson taking inside-right and Speedie outside – began aggressively, but weak marksmanship brought them byes instead of goals, Smith, Mackie and Stark all having fruitless tries. Lacking the assistance of Bennett the Parkhead attack was disorganised, but McNair was always a thorn in the side of Easton, and he had many brilliant breakaway on his own account. Rangers played the more effective football, the clever combination of Kyle and Smith being especially noticeable. From the latter came the opening goal, Easton sent in the ball, which Young missed, and the outside left man lying handy banged into the net. For the Rangers Easton, May, Kyle and Smith were best, while prominent of the Celtic side were Hay, Young, Somers and McNair. In semi-darkness time was called with the result – Rangers 1 goal: Celtic 0.
