Match Trivia
Replayed tie on the ground of the Rangers, Ibrox Park before 25,000 spectators. There was a drizzle of rain, and a promise of more, as Allan sharp at two o’clock, kicked off for the Celtic. A foul for hands against the Rangers helped the Celts a bit, but nothing either interesting or valuable came from it, and in the succeeding play Campbell, when he night have steadied himself, shot high over. From the kick-off Welford nicely stopped Smith, and when the Light Blues forwards came again Russell dispossessed Hyslop after the Ibrox brigade had got up with some fine concerted work. After the rain the going was very heavy, and told greatly on the pace. Another free kick helped the representative of Parkhead, but a fine centre of Gilhooley’s was easily saved by Dickie, not a solitary Celt being up to assist the ball into the net. A corner off Crawford brought nothing, and them the Ibrox brigade were penalised for a little over zeal in a bout between Hamilton and Doyle. Hard open play, in which the halves on both sides showed to fairly good advantage, followed and then the Rangers got in, when a corner was conceded to save. Gilhooley beat Mitchell in a rush up, but the crossing was badly mulled and the Rangers shifted the ball to the other end. Smith passed finely between the backs, and Hyslop running on made no mistake about the chance, scoring 13 minutes from the start with a shot that McArthur never had a passing acquaintance with. The cheers were loud and long, and the Rangers re-started with any amount of go; but the heavy ground told a little, and play for a bit was slow. Gilhooley got nicely away, and to the ordinary eye rather easily beat Drummond. With nobody near him the little fellow shot right across, and 28 minutes from the start Allan headed through. Both ends were visited afterwards, play being of the hardest. At halftime the score was – Rangers 1 goal: Celtic 1 goal. On restarting a long drive of Welford’s let the Celtic left wing down, but Neil kicked out, and from the succeeding play, Welford stopped Hamilton, who was playing a resolute game, and a fine header of Blessington’s right in front of Dickie looked very dangerous for a time. Twice in as many minutes Dickie kicked away shots from McMahon, and then Gilhooley headed on the top of the net. The Rangers broke away, but Smith was penalised for tripping Welford, and Drummond had to keep out the Celtic right pair. The Ibrox lot came again, but Low nicely placed, failed to get round Doyle, and when the ball came again McPherson shot wide. Gilhooley at the other end sent over, and hard end-to-end play of a very high class, considering the heavy ground, succeeded for a spell. A free kick moderately close to the penalty line made a lively minute, but the ball was ultimately sent past, and until the close of play settled in the Rangers half. The finish of the hour and a half’s play was – Rangers 1 goal: Celtic 1 goal. Having drawn on three occasions an extra half-hour was ordered to be played, neither team leaving the field. There was no scoring. The pace was obviously telling on both elevens, but the game continued to be vigorously fought, and for a great game the football was of a surprisingly high order. Fortune, which had delayed so long in deciding on its favourite, at last favoured the Rangers, and after McArthur had saved brilliantly, but not too safely, Hamilton scored ten minutes from the close. The enthusiasm, which followed, was simply terrific, and the teams resumed amidst deafening cheers. The Celtic rallied, but Allan when he might have gone on waited until Drummond dispossessed him, and the other forwards, though they held their own, were poor in finishing. The Light Blues came again, and literally playing through the Parkhead defence, scored through Hamilton a third goal four minutes from the close. Until the close they had the pull, and one of the finest semi-finals in the history of the Glasgow Cup competition ended amidst great enthusiasm – Rangers 3 goals: Celtic 1 goal.
