Match Trivia
Extraordinary interest was taken in this match, which was played at Ibrox Park, Govan. Fully 18,000 spectators were present. The Rangers were fully represented, while the Celtic were without Maley and McMahon. Prompt to time Gray of the Rangers kicked off. From the start the game was hotly contested. After some give-and-take centre play the Celtic forwards got away, but Campbell spoiled the chance by shooting over the bar. The Rangers next had a look in, and obtained a corner, but Doyle cleared. Keeping up the pressure, they were soon round Cullen again, who stopped a fast shot from McPherson. Ere he could recover himself Steel had the ball in the net – first goal for Rangers. The Celtic were next dangerous, but Cassidy shot wide of the mark. Returning to the attack, the Rangers finished up a combined run but putting on a second goal, Barker doing the needful. Five minutes later the Rangers put on the third goal, Gray scoring with a header from a pass by Steel. The Celtic, nettled at this reverses, strove hard to make up their leeway, but the defence of the Rangers was not to be beat. Halftime result – Rangers 3 goals: Celtic 0. On resuming play, the game was again first to open up the play, Blessington being prominent. He passed to Cassidy, and that player missed the goal by inches. The game now became very fast, each goal being assailed in turn. The Celtic might have scored, but their front division lacked cohesion. Time after time they got away only to be checked by the opposing halves or backs. The Rangers forwards were playing quite a different game. Seldom have they been seen to better advantage. Their combination was perfect, and they seemed to be trained to the hour. Taking up the run of the play, the Rangers made matters warm for Cullen. Carrying all before them, they scored a fourth goal, Barker again doing the needful. Five minutes later the same player put on the fifth goal for the Rangers. This finishing the scoring. On play the better team won, as they took the game in hand from the start. The Celtic felt the loss of McMahon very much. Their best men were Reynolds, Dunbar and Blessington. For the Rangers, the backs both played a grand game, so also did Steel, McPherson and Barker forward. Final result – Rangers 5 goals: Celtic 0 goals.
