Rangers turned on their best display of the season before 62,745 crowd at Hampden last night to defeat Celtic in the first round of the Glasgow Charity Cup. Goals by Thornton and Findlay in the first eight minutes sent them to victory. Celtic fought with great spirit especially in the first half when we had the most fantastic weather thunder, lightning, rain and hailstone. Their full-backs and McGrory, at centre-half, however, were reckless and indecisive, Woodburn kept McPhail in almost complete subjection. Every Ranger played well, with Young, McColl, Woodburn, Cox and Waddell the stars. It was a good move to restore Thornton to centre forward and put Simpson inside left. Thornton scored one of his spectacular goals when he rose to head through a Young free kick after five minutes. In three more minutes, Findlay beat Hunter to a Waddell pass and the inside right lofted the ball past the keeper on to the underside of the bar and into the net. Celtic hit back and Collins, after tricking Cox, shot over. In Rangers next raid Evans sliced a Thornton centre past for a corner, but Celtic were soon back, and Tully was all over the place creating openings and Brown made a daring dive at Walshs feet to save a certain goal. In 24 minutes, Hunter made a thrilling leap to turn a scoring 30-yarder from Cox round the post. Two minutes later Rutherford was injured but soon recovered and next minute Hunter dived to save at full length a Findlay shot. Rangers supporters howled for a penalty when the ball struck McGrorys hand. Thunder and lightning, it became so dark that lights were switched on in the stand. Torrential rain, hailstones, but no slackening by the players in this all-action struggle, field snow-white as Findlay ran through to shoot wide. Waddell put the Celtic goal in danger with two hanging crosses at the start of the second half. Hunter dropped the second, but the ball was cleared. Rangers looked as if they would increase their lead, but seven minutes from the end Tully headed a good goal from a Collins pass to put Celtic in with a chance. The Parkhead men put in a terrific but unsuccessful finish to save the match.
