Match Trivia
Glasgow League match at Ibrox before 25,000 spectators. Losing the toss the Rangers kicked off, they had the wind in their favour. Celtic were first to press, and Dickie twice had to throw our. A raid by Blessington and Morrison from a pass by Crossan forced a corner off Drummond. It came to nothing. A brilliant tackle by Mitchell was the next feature of the game. Then Russell fouled the ball, and from the free kick Drummond placed right in front of McArthur, but Doyle cleared. This was followed by a free kick against the Rangers. Another corner for the Celts followed, but N Smith cleared. The game was fast, the Celts having the best of it. Drummond conceded another corner, bit it also proved fruitless. A fine shot by Miller got the ball in the net at McArthur’s end, but the whistle had previously blown for a foul. A minute later Low got a pass from the left wing, and with a shot, which gave McArthur no chance he scored the first goal for the Rangers. The Celts tried hard to get on equality after this, but they were met by a stubborn defence. From a free kick Miller put on a second goal for the Rangers after Doyle had headed the ball out. The Celts got within shooting distance, but Hyslop cleared. At halftime the Rangers led by 2 to 0. The second half began, like the first, with a visit from the Celts who could not get past Drummond however. Then A Smith and Hyslop got off, and the former passed to Low, who shot, but McArthur cleverly saved, although several Rangers were on him at the line. Crossan was getting settled for a shot when he fouled N Smith and spoiled his chance. The game was fast, but the Celts were having the pull. Score however they could not. Low opened up the play, and got past Doyle, but he was blocked by King, who ran back to save. It took several minutes for Low to come round. He signalised his recovery by sending in a shot, which struck the net and went past. At the other end, after a grand run by Crossan and Gilhooley, a scrimmage was formed, which Dickie cleared. Some capital play by the Rangers forwards ended with Hyslop shooting and McArthur saving. He fell with the ball in his hands, and ere he could recover McPherson landed the ball in the net. Third goal for the Rangers. McArthur did not rise, and it was seen he was pretty severely hurt when several of the club supporters carried him into the pavilion. King took McArthur’s place in goal. Play continued in favour of the Rangers, who completely outplayed their opponents. A shot by Hyslop was finely saved by King. Occasionally the Celtic forwards broke away, but they were seldom dangerous. Result – Rangers 3 goals: Celtic 0.
