Match Trivia
League match played at Ibrox before 15,000 spectators, the ground was frost bound. The Rangers having lost the toss kicked off with a strong sun and a slight breeze against them. Henderson and Ferguson were getting set when N Smith stopped their progress with a long return. For a time Celtic continued to keep the Rangers defence on the alert, but Drummond again cleared. A Smith and Hyslop were next prominent, and from a run by the former, Orr gave a corner. Russell got the ball safely out of danger. Another run by the Celtic forwards gave Ferguson a chance, but he was pulled up for being offside. The free kick relieved the pressure on the Rangers quarters, and again Low and McPherson had the ball into Celtic territory. At this stage Groves left the field. A free kick against the Rangers right in front of goal 15 yards out looked well for the Celts, but Hyslop relieved. The Rangers gained confidence after this narrow escape, and they made matters warm for the Celtic back division. Fine passing by the forwards and judicious playing by the halfbacks enabled the Rangers to get the ball past McArthur, but Hyslop, who shot was adjudged offside. Still the Rangers continued to press, and twice they obtained corners. Both were fruitless however. Groves reappeared, but his team had to continue to act on the defensive. Halftime result – A draw, no scoring. Without losing any time the teams crossed over and resumed the game. Celtic were without Groves. Play opened briskly by Hyslop and Miller getting off on the left. They looked all over like scoring, but a foul against A Smith for forcible charging brought them up. The free kick helped the Celts, whose four forwards came away grandly. Blessington put in telling work, and Dickie had twice to save from shots by the Celts. In self-defence the Celts conceded a corner, which was well placed, and McPherson with a swift shot scored the first goal of the match. With the score against them the Celts made strenuous efforts to improve their position. For several minutes they looked like getting the ball through, but Dickie fairly excelled in clever saving tactics. The run of the play was distinctly in favour of the Rangers. Doyle was playing a great game, and but for him the Rangers score would have been larger. A free kick for Rangers was placed in the net by Drummond, but as the ball touched no one in its progress nothing resulted. Another spurt by the Celts followed, Blessington and Morrison led them out, but score they could not. Again the Rangers took the game in hand. A brace of corners proved fruitless, while McArthur was cheered for cleverly saving a couple of shots by Hyslop. The Rangers pressed severely, and when A Smith scored their second goal from a scrimmage the result seemed certain. The Celtic forwards strove hard to redeem their laurels, but they were no match for the Rangers backs, who held them safely in check. Result – Rangers 2 goals: Celtic 0. Previous to the match the teams lodged a protest with the referee as to the unplayable state of the ground. The protest will be considered ay the first meeting of the League.
