Match Trivia
Finlay Speedie Benefit Match. These teams met last night at Ibrox Park in a friendly match, the proceeds of which were for the benefit of Speedie, the Rangers forward. There was a good attendance of spectators. Celtic kicked off and at once the game gave indication of being stoutly contested. For some time there was little between the teams, and the ball travelled rapidly from goal to goal. From one of their incursions, Rangers were fortunate to score. The ball came from Spiers to Speedie, who appropelately enough opened the scoring. A few minutes later, Hay almost equalised with a grand shot far out, but ultimately the equaliser came from Quinn, completely beat Newbigging. At the other end, Spiers looked likely, but was beaten in the race for the ball by Adams, who shortly afterwards had to retire owing to tearing his hand on a nail protruding from the goal post. At halftime the score was Rangers 1 goal: Celtic 1 goal. On resumption Jackson took Adam’s place in goal and a substitute appeared at centre-half. The game had barely started when the Rangers led by Smith were down on Jackson. The outside left man parted with the ball opportunely, the pass going to Speedie, who again scored. Subsequently Banchop had a great shot on the run, the ball striking the corner of the bat, and on the other wing Somers repeated the operation, the ball again bobbing about in front of Newbigging, ultimately going past. In turn Rangers attacked, and Smith had a good try, which just failed to turn into the goal. The outside wing-man however did the trick ten minutes later with a beautiful shot 30 yards out, and Spiers made the total four after a brilliant bit of individual work. Close on time Hay scored from a penalty. If anything emerged from the play, it was that the Rangers have an excellent defence this season. Result – Rangers 4 goals: Celtic 2 goal
