Match Trivia
This tie between the Rangers and the Celtic was played on Cathkin Park before 13,000 spectators. Drummond won the toss, but there was not much advantage in it, the wind being a cross one. The ground although somewhat heavy, looked in grand condition. King kicked off, and aided by a foul, the Celts got within range of Dickie, when Madden headed past. A free kick to the Rangers gave McPherson a chance, but the right-winger missed it. Doyle burst up a good bit of combination by the Rangers forwards, and McMahon fastening on, the Celts gave a grand display of passing, Divers being just too late to cap along cross from Madden. Away went the Rangers forwards, and Meechan had to concede a corner in stopping a shot from Hyslop. It was well taken, and after a good deal of hard scrimmaging McArthur got the ball on the goal line and cleared. Low’s first encounter with Doyle ended in the Rangers favour, another corner resulting. A long shot from McCreadie bothered McArthur, but he got it away all right, his backs defending him well. The Rangers had the advantage of the wind, and as a result had most of the play. A weak return by Drummond let the opposing forwards off, but the Falkirk man recovered himself in time. A grand shot from Turnbull was stopped by Doyle, a second attempt by the centre going over the bar. Kelly distinguished himself by some clever tackling, and his speed on one occasion served his side well, when Hyslop looked clear away. Play was very fast, both goals being visited in turn. A regular Rugby maul was forced in front of McArthur, Russell eventually coming out with the ball at his foot. The Celtic defence were being well tested, and it was well that the backs were in their finest form. The Rangers forwards if not exactly timorous gave Doyle and Meechan too much room, and it would have paid then better to rail more, and discarded parlour methods. Try, as they liked the Celts left wing, usually so brilliant could not get started, Divers being particularly weak. The Rangers at last got the ball in the net, but it was from a free kick, and touched nobody in its passage. Shots of all kind the Rangers tried, but they were far off the goal as a rule. Battles stopped Low when the right-winger looked dangerous, and from his pass the left wing at length got a start. Smith was on the spot, however and disposed of almost brought the Rangers the desired point, McArthur clearing just as Hyslop rushed in to score. Turnbull had really hard luck with a fine low shot, which just missed the mark. At the other end, Madden was responsible for a very wild attempt to beat Dickie, but the wind was hard against him, and it was a difficult shot to take. McPherson endeavoured to put more go into the Rangers front rank, his rushing tactics upsetting Kelly a bit. There can be no doubt that, the Rangers had the greater part of the play, but their weakness at goal was painfully evident. The two best shots of this half came from McCreadie the first being returned by McArthur, and the second going over the bar. Divers and McMahon created a diversion in the Celts favour, and for a time the Rangers goal was threatened, Blessington missing an easy chance of putting his team in the lead. What he missed Turnbull took advantage of. A good run on the right wing brought the point, and after McArthur had saved, Turnbull shot into the net five minutes from halftime. The Rangers as a whole and Low in particular, seemed encouraged by this success, the little right-winger tricking three of his opponents and getting clear away, and no one would have been surprised had another goal resulted, when offside was claimed and allowed. Halftime arrived shortly after, the Rangers leading by 1 goal to 0.
Turnbull restarted, and after some midfield play Madden fastened on, and Dickie had to rush out and clear. His abilities were again tested the next minute a long shot from Blessington causing him to look lively. Hyslop transferred the play, and some exciting scenes took place found McArthur, Doyle ultimately clearing. A grand return by Drummond stopped King, and then Low narrowly missed scoring. Contrary to expectations, the Rangers were monopolising the play. Gibson made a mistake, which let Divers off, but the left-winger did not make the most of his opportunity, and dallied too long. Madden however came to the rescue, and Dickie charge had a narrow escape, a corner resulting. This was well placed, but Battles put the leather out of doubt by sending the ball over the bar. A nicely taken free kick by Doyle gave his forwards a chance. Divers however again missing at the critical point. From midfield Doyle placed the ball into the net, Divers making a great effort to get his head on it before it passed between the posts, but without avail. The Celts were going strongly and no mistake, and taking advantage of weak clearance by Mitchell, Madden put in a grand centre, which McMahon headed through, thus placing the teams on an equal footing. The Celts very nearly had another, Dickie flinging himself full length on the ground, and just getting a shot from Blessington outside the points. This was not good enough for the Rangers, and Low gave them hope as he accounted past Battles. Turnbull however was at fault, hanging too long on the ball with the result that Meechan relieved him of it. The Rangers still kept round McArthur, but their shooting was not in keeping with their midfield play. Battles had a huge punt, and King catching it up, gave Dickie a smart shot, another corner falling to the Celts, which like all the others, was unproductive. Drummond was playing a rare game for his side, but McCreadie seemed a bit off, his returns lacking strength. After some splendid play Turnbull got off, and with Low made tracks for McArthur. A slip by the centre lost the Rangers a grand opportunity, Meechan not being slow to take advantage of Turnbull’s error. A curious scene was witnessed at Dickie’s goal, no less than three Celtic forwards being behind the two backs, offside being at once allowed. Fouls were frequent, Smith being penalised for upsetting Kelly, while King was delinquent on the Celtic side. Smith shot beauty when a rare opening presented itself, and then McMahon at the other end also was at fault. No further scoring took place, the result being a draw, one goal each.
