Match Trivia

After a game which abounded with thrilling incidents, and was contested with vigour and earnestness altogether surprising, Rangers won the Glasgow Charity Cup at Hampden Park last night. Twenty-two thousands spectators – the gate and stand drawings totalled £593 – were kept intensely interested from the very opening kick. When everything is considered the Rangers must be credited with having gained a deserved victory. What might have happened had not Quinn been disabled early in the game can only be matter for conjecture, but with that handicap the Celts were unable to gain the supremacy which they endeavoured so strenuously to achieve. Quinn was occupying the extreme left position, his place in centre being taken by the Aberdeen Army amateur WD Nichol. After showing clever play in the position which he first occupied when coming to Parkhead, Quinn met with a nasty knee injury early in the game, and had to retire until the interval. He came out in the second half, but another knock brought about his retiral when the game had still about twenty-five minutes to run. The goal scoring was all reserved for the second half. Reid slipped one through after Adams had cleared and was surrounded by a crowd of players, and following that with a very peculiar one. Adams, who otherwise put up a splendid game, fielded a simple ball which he could easily have thrown out. Instead of that he bounced the ball, and Reid nipping smartly in turned it over the goalkeeper’s head and into the net. Then came a brilliant goal by Nichol. Receiving the ball a few yards outside the penalty area, he steered clear of Richmond, and with a magnificent drive, beat Lock, who got his hand to the ball, but could not stay its progress. Celts then played desperately to get the equalising goal, but all that came their way was a lead in corners. The feature of the game was the magnificent display given by Dodds at left back for the Celtic. He met the opposition with resolute tackling, kicking clean and sure, and showed more recovery power. He was not equalled by any other back playing, even the usually clever McNair being over-shadowed by his younger partner. Campbell and Richmond did well for the Rangers, both showing improvement after the interval. Rangers were superior at half-back, in which division for the Celts McAteer was not up to his usual. Gordon and Young were the best of the six. The Parkhead forwards began well, but were badly handicapped by Quinn’s absence. Donaldson was outstanding for the subtlety of his footwork, but the best Nichol did was to score a magnificent goal. The Rangers attack went smoothly, the cleverest work coming from the left wing and centre. Reid missed badly on two occasions, as did also Hogg on another. With the exception of the one mistake by Adams, the goalkeeping was excellent
