Match Trivia
A friendly game between these clubs was played on the ground of the former at Kinning Park, in presence of between 2000 and 3000 spectators. The ground was very soft and slippery. The Rangers lost the toss and had to play the first half with the sun shinning strongly in their faces. Notwithstanding this disadvantage they followed up Lindsay’s kick off so well that for a few minutes their opponents goals was placed in imminent danger, the ball several times getting behind and the light blues securing a corner. A combined rush was however made by the Cambuslang, and McIntyre was compelled to hand out. When the pressure was relieved the Rangers did some amiable passing up the field, and Fraser got two corners in quick succession landing the ball in both cases at the mouth of the goal though his comrades did not follow up the advantage. Thereafter the game, though on the whole in continued slightly in favour of the Rangers, was pretty equal and Gourlay the Cambuslang forward made some well-placed headers and kick for goal, while his supporters several times sent the leather over the bar. As the first half drew to a close matters became more lively for the Rangers, who had to act on the defensive, but when the whistle blew no goals has been scored by either side. When ends were changed the sun was still bright, so that the Rangers had a slight advantage over their opponents. James Buchanan set the ball rolling for the Cambuslang, and at once the Rangers commence the offensive and in one of their efforts the ball was sent over the bar, another shot immediately afterwards being only saved by Dunn in time. About ten minutes after play had begun a foul was given against the light blues, and following up their advantage the Cambuslang made a combined rush for goal which was however frustrated, and a foul given against them in return equalised matters somewhat. The play, which now became more equal, was of rather give-and-take nature, the leather travelling up and down the field, sometimes the one side and sometimes the other having the best of it. About ten minutes before the game ended the Cambuslang men made a rush and gained a corner securing a goal out of the scrimmage that followed. The remainder of the game was in their favour, and the match resulted as follows – Cambuslang 1 goal, Rangers 0
