Match Trivia
Well, dont blame Blairgowrie. They did their best. To score a couple of goals against the Rangers at Ibrox was something, and you can depend upon it they are going to treasure these goals. And left me pay them one deserved complement. Harassed as they were by the machine-like work of the rangers half-backs and forwards, their defence never did a shady thing. They took their gruel like thorough sportsmen as indeed, they were. Surely that is something. No offside tricks, no third-back game, no nothing but doing their honest best. The big pitch and the skidding ball handicapped the berrypickers right away. Their forwards could not kill the ball at all. It beat them as often as did the Ibrox defenders. But on a hard ground they would do heaps better. There were signs of ability on the right wing, where Lynch and McInearney showed glimpses of real ability in working together. And a pat on the back for Malcolm. Hes a goalkeeper, even if he lost 14. It would have been 20 but for him. Fleming had nine of the goals, which equals the modern individual Scottish Cup record held by Simpson, of Partick Thistle, but falls short of the 13 scored by a lad named John Petrie for Arbroath away back in 1885. And talking of records, this is not the biggest Scottish cup win recorded by Rangers, who won by 14-2 against Whitehill in 1884. I think the best way to tell you about this Ibrox game is in tabular form, so here goes :- First-half - 30 seconds Fleming, 7 minutes Nicholson, 12 minutes Fleming, 32 minutes Fleming, 42 minutes Fleming - Second Half - 10 minutes Venters, 12 minutes Fleming, 14 minutes Marshall, 15 minutes Fleming, 17 minutes Fleming, 21 minutes Marshall, 32 minutes Venters, 41 minutes Fechlie, 43 minutes Fleming, 44 minutes Fleming, 44 ½ minutes Lynch. You can grasp the story from that. What more need be said? Rangers couldnt help scoring. Blairgowrie players enjoyed their bath, the officials were hospitably treated, and all said that Glasgow was a great city.
