Match Trivia

These clubs met on Kinning Park and what would undoubtedly have been a fast game was somewhat marred by the state of the ground which owing to the heavy rains was in anything but playable condition. Two thirty-fives were played. An evenly contested game resulted in a win for the Blackburn team by two goals to one. All the goals were taken during the first half. The Rangers first showed in front of the Rovers posts and had several hard tries for goal before the strangers were able to break through the local defence. Heggie and Gossland early in the game had good tries but the clever goal keeping of Arthur and the able support of the backs and halfbacks nullified all attempts at scoring. Heggie got possession of the leather in front of goal and though badly pressed made a grand attempt to lower the colours of the Rovers and the ball grazed the post on the outside by about two inches. The Rovers however on settling down played a fine passing game and were several times near scoring. They got a corner kick but Gossland sent the ball flying across the field and Hamilton tackling Suter made direct for goal. On nearing the posts he steadied himself and kick the ball for goal. The keeper managed to throw it out but before he could recover Hamilton had returned the ball and the applause that followed announced a goal for the Rangers. This was fifteen minutes after the kick-off. Some brilliant play was next shown by the Rovers. Lofthouse sent the ball past the side of the posts and almost immediately afterwards Brown equalised by scoring a goal for the Rovers. Good runs were made by Gossland on the one side and Brown and Lofthouse on the other. After each goal in turn narrowly escaped being taken. Lofthouse by a smart side shot put on another point for the Rovers. Half time was shortly afterwards called. The second portion of the game calls for few remarks. The play was about equal but at times the players were so fatigued that they were almost unable to play. No more goals were scored though both Chalmers and Arthur distinguish themselves on more than one occasion by preventing the lowering of their colours. The Rovers played a capital game throughout. The forwards passed well together and the back play was always to be relied on. Individually the Rangers played well but it is only fair to mention that they were severely handicapped. Cameron who for the first twenty minutes kicked with great judgement received an injury which ultimately necessaries his withdrawal from the field. For some time after he got hurt he took part in the game but shortly after the second half began be retired
