Match Trivia
Rangers were throughout the maters of Ayr United at Ibrox. True, the strangers scored first, and the pegging was level at the interval, but there was never any doubt about the superiority of the Light Blues. The United put up quite a game fight, especially in the first half, when they had behind them a strong wind; and although they were well whipped, yet they left a good impression at Ibrox. They opened the scoring in twelve minutes when Crosbie from fairly long range, ripped in a fast, rising shot which beat Hempsey to the wide. Rangers had as much of the play as Ayr, the half-backs and forwards forcing finely in the teeth of the breeze. In half an hour Bowie placed down the centre in perfect fashion. Hart tipped out to Aitken, who returned to Hart, and the centre, unmarked, scored a capital goal. But the United were not by any means done. They attacked strongly. Manderson returned feebly, and McLaughlan slung in to Agnew, who found the net in rattling style. Before the interval Cairns equalised with an oblique shot from close range, and it was two’s up at half time. Ayr resumed encouragingly, but Rangers soon took their measure, and play for the most part hovered bear Eadon. Only occasionally did the visitors break away, but once or twice they had rather hard lines. Hart gave the Light Blues the lead in ten minutes. This goal followed a heavy assault all along the line. Bowie soon scored a lovely fourth, which put the issue beyond doubt. The same player added two more beauties, and accomplished the hat-trick. Ayr were now down and out. For the winners, Manderson, Dixon, Pursell, Walls, Bowie, Aitken and Cairns were the pick. Eadon, Semple, McLaughlin, Gillespie, Crosbie and Dorward shone for Ayr
