Match Trivia

A goal by McPhail after half an hour is about all the first half at Ibrox deserves in print. It was dull, cheerless stuff. The curtain on it. But the second half was better, and then we knew there were some folks with lungs round about. The salient feature of the match was the expertness of the Rangers forwards in failing at the most tempting scoring chances. They made such a habit of it that the Ayr front line, with a mere fraction of the opportunities for scoring, actually threatened to save a point before Macaulay sent home the second goal 32 minutes after the restart. If rangers forwards should have scored, say a handful, let it not be forgotten that their goal had some marvellous escapes, and that Dawson had a couple of saves from Brae which were what you might call match-savers. Obviously, the rangers were not themselves. Down to London and back again, with an exciting match in between, does not make for sparkle. But one thing pleased the Ibrox crowd. Kinnear, in the second half, was the entertainer. Up he came like a Jack-in-the-box, dancing in and out, and generally giving to the game a touch of vivacity which was badly needed. Perhaps he lacks the knowledge of when to part or shoot, but he will learn that all right. He has football. Macaulay was best of the other forwards. Smith was a shooting sinner. McPhail changed to centre late in the game and was limping. Main put some dandy centres across, and – no takers. Further behind, the winners were all right - backs sound, Meiklejohn, with that old head of his, placing the ball just where he wanted. Simpson a barrier, and Brown up and at it. Ayr’s defence gave nothing away. Hepburn and his backs took the honours, but not all of them, for Currie was a gritty defender, and Holland a half-back with an eye to construction. As a line, the forwards disappointed. They were clever at times and could give the Ibrox defence something to worry about, but they did not make full use of what fell to them. Brae showed the others the way and Dawson can tell you all about that. Still, there is something in the United attack which will be bad for defences less tactical than the Rangers’ rear, and you will see points going to Somerset, or I am no judge. I did not agree with one or two of the offside decisions, but such things will happen, even of they shouldn’t
