Match Trivia

Rangers gave a sparkling display against Ayr United at Ibrox Park last night and won as they liked. It was their ‘daft’ night, and the Somerset Park men could not stand up to it. At half-time, rangers led by six goals to none. Smith registered four and Stevenson two. Their shooting in this half was exceptionally deadly, and all round they were seen at their best. Their halfs were fine tacklers, and never allowed the Ayr forwards to settle into their game. Their constructive ability too made things very easy for the forwards. Five minutes from the interval McPhail left the field through an injury, and when the second half commenced, he was still absent. Ayr came a little more into the picture at this period, and when they scored within 15 minutes, I thought they they were going to improve on their first half display. However, I was doomed to disappointment, for Rangers took charge again, and goals came easily. Smith accepted a pass from Brown, and from 35 yards’ let go a terrific left-foot shot, which left Hepburn helpless for the seventh goal. In less than two minutes, the same player made the score eight, and almost on the whistle Stevenson added the ninth. Dawson, in the Ibrox goal, was not seriously tested. The shot which beat him was the only thing he was asked to deal with, and it was quite unsaveable. Gray and McDonald had an easy time. The halfs saw to that. Archibald and Nicholson were fine raiders. ‘Sandy’ seems to have renewed his youth. McPhail was his old self while he was on the field, but he did not appear in the second half. For Ayr, Hepburn, although beaten so often, kept a grand goal, considering the deadly shooting of the Rangers attack. Falconer and Ure had a gruelling time of it, because the middlemen were unable to cope with the strength and dash of the opposition. I will refrain from criticising the forwards. They all had to fend for themselves and got little chance to shine
