Match Trivia
Ibrox Park last night. Had Fiddes scored from the spot Im afraid the Arsenal would have found themselves in a pickle of bother to make up the leeway. Rangers would then have found themselves sitting high and dry with a three goals lead. The youngster missed badly, however, and the question arises Why was the most inexperienced player in the Rangers team ordered to try his luck? Following this let off, arsenal, who had been clearly outplayed up till that point, took heart, and receiving added encouragement from a goal scored by Davidson nine minutes after the interval, got going with more deadly intent than they had done hitherto, and reaped their reward fifteen minutes from the end by getting the equalising goal through Dunne. A really brilliant effort. It was nice to see the Arsenal leader get this goal, as throughout he had proved their only deadly marksman and the one player holding out possibilities of beating Dawson. The other forwards were for the most part under a cloud, with Milne and Bastin specially disappointing. Davidson worked hard and did some clever things, but his releasing of the ball was faulty. Among the defenders, John and Hapgood impressed me most, owing to the touch of class that was always apparent, although Compton and Joy were also useful defenders. Still, it cannot be said that Arsenals big guns got going in full blast, and general play were just a trifle fortunate to make a draw of it. Rangers played some real good football during the first half, had a great chance during that period to pile up a comfortable and winning lead. They got two goals, it is true, but should have had more on chances going. They were particularly strong at half-back then, with Brown and Meiklejohn purveying in their best style. Smith and Kinnear made quite a good wing, although the outside-left was a bad lad now and then in finishing. Smiths goal, scored fifteen minutes after the start, was an amazing affair. He was right on the goal line, twelve yards away, when he shot, and how the ball got past Wilson is a mystery. Twenty minutes later Fiddes, who was playing quite well, shot a great ball which rebounded from off an upright to Kinnear, and Wilson was well beaten with a shot from close in. Rangers sagged somewhat after the interval, and this gave Arsenal their opportunity, which they accepted to the extent of pulling the match out of the fire. Fiddes missed a 47th minute penalty
