Match Trivia
Arbroath could have had nothing better than a baptism against Rangers. It was a case of being thrown in at the deep end, and if there were weaknesses they were bound to appear. To be beaten 6-0 may seem humiliating, but Arbroath should remember that they are not meeting a team of Rangers class every Saturday and take heart plus a few object lessons. The League babes were palpably weak in attack, particularly on the wings. Seldom did they get moving, despite persistent urging by a powerful half-back line. When they did come within range of goal, they were too slow to shoot. In fact, the two best shots Arbroath had came from half-back Urquhart. Apart from these two shots, Dawson had a comparatively easy afternoon. Yes, Arbroaths chief trouble was in front. In the rear, they were fairly sound, but the defenders, although fighting stubbornly, were overworked, especially when the Ibrox rearguard, realising they had the opposing attack well in hand, came up to add further strength to their colleagues. Urquhart I would single out as Arbroaths best man. John Johnston and McNab were little behind him and in this trio, Arbroath have the backbone of their team. Becci, if a trifle robust, was the better back, and Cumming a safe keeper. Rangers were never stretched, and the weak opposition did not allow one to form any impression of their capabilities. I must, however, mention Gillick and Kinnear. The formers goal was a thing of beauty. Taking a Venters pass in his stride, he crashed the ball into the roof of the net. Kinnear can beat his man, crosses well, can use either foot, and is not slow to shoot. At half-back, McDonald and Simpson and Brown were strong, although I have seldom seen Simpson spoon so many kicks. Dawson, Gray and Cheyne more or less walked through the game. Smiths shooting was seldom off the target, and he was ably supported by McPhail. Smith opened Rangers account after Cumming had failed to hold a McDonald free-kick. Dawson had to dive at Brands feet two minutes later to prevent a score. Gillick scored a great goal two minutes from the half-time. With the wind after the interval Rangers were in Easy Street and scored two more through McPhail and Smith within twelve minutes. Smith failed with a penalty-kick, but a minute later added a fifth goal. The up came Brown to add a sixth point. Smith missed a second half penalty
