Match Trivia
Well done, Albion Rovers! The score may appear a misprint, but take it from me, it might have shown a victory for Coatbridge and Rangers could not have said one word of complaint. We have had some amazing results in this desperate relegation struggle. Albion Rovers arrived at Ibrox with the shadow of the guillotine hovering over them. They left in joyous mood they were practically safe. Practically every Rover must be praised. If I single out Beath, the most polished and effective back afield, Bruce, a tenacious tackler and purposeful distributor, and McPhee, a cute and elusive winger who often bamboozled Kennedy in the first half, I must add that their mates were little or nothing behind. All revealed a spirit and dash which surprised the onlookers and almost shocked Rangers. In the twelfth minute Gillick, running in, crashed the ball high into the net with terrific force. Two minutes, Main delivered a bobby-dazzler after outstripping Brath. Crossley was stretched full out on the turf to save. He stopped the ball, but could not hold it, and up bounded Gillick to send it raging to the roof of then net. The gallant Coatbridge lads struck back in seventeen minutes, Lyon coming in to jab the ball home after Dawson had parried an Anderson shot on the ground. Dawson and Simpson were at fault when Albion Rovers equalised through Connors header in twenty-seven minutes. On those valiant Rovers fought in the second half. The goal which would have given them a sensational triumph was denied them, but on two or three occasions they were thwarted by a hairs breadth. Dawson saved a raging ball from Turnbull after Connor had laid it on for him, then the centre failed to get his foot to the ball properly, with no one between him and the net but Dawson. Rangers also had their moments, but against those dour tackling, unflinching defenders they could do nothing.
