Match Trivia

It was a fierce game at Ibrox last night between Rangers and Aberdeen. The casualty list included Smith, Meiklejohn, Walls, Bowie, Cairns and Morton, and Anderson, Hutton McLachlan and Middleton. Bowie was the most seriously injured and was obliged to limp out the second half on the line. Rangers won by 2-1, as they deserved to do on play. They were much the superior lot at the outset, but all one the piece they were the more superior than the score indicates. Indeed, the Ibrox defence was well tested in the last twenty minutes after Aberdeen had got their goal. Smith in particular had to play the clear-at-all-cost game to keep his end up. Play was hard rather than good, with the Rangers opening well on the right wing. For the nonce Archibald must have forgotten how to hesitate, for he had several beautiful first-time crosses, one which Cairns or Cunningham might have improved on. But they couldn’t agree who was to take the kick, so Hutton decided for them by clearing. It was perilously like a penalty when Hutton edged Cairns off the ball when he was going through. Rangers had a ‘corner’ or two before Cunningham scored. After 22 minutes play, a great drive from him rebounded off Hutton. Anderson had no chance. Aberdeen had done nothing very starling before Cairns headed a second point. Alan Morton had been twice badly treated near the corner flag, and it was from the second free kick, that Tommy scored. Then we saw the Pittodrie players do some really clever work on the wings. Middleton got the better of Smith repeatedly, and Ritchie tricked Manderson very cleverly twice succession. Bertie held on to him the second time, but the free kick was only a near thing. Crossing over with a two-goal lead, Rangers looked easy winners. In a couple of minutes Bowie went lame in a great effort to beat Anderson, and with the attack disjoined the defence suffered. Hereabout McDonald had a ‘pinch’. He had the ball at his foot when someone shouted offside. He hesitated and was robbed. Then Aberdeen scored. Middleton beat Smith in a tackle. McLaughlin drove hard. Robb saved brilliantly. But he couldn’t stop Thomson’s shot. Thus, the fight went on for twenty minutes more, but we got no more goals. One great shot by Cunningham rattled the crossbar, and another from Wright, Robb tipped over. For the Rangers, Robb, Walls, Cunningham and Cairns were most outstanding, while Anderson, Wright, Milne, Middleton and Ritchie were chiefly in the Aberdeen picture
