Match Trivia

I am afraid you are not observing the rule concerning full teams”, jocularly remarked Mr Philip of Aberdeen , to the Rangers’ manager, just after the inaugural match of the Inter-City Mid-Week League starts at Ibrox Park yesterday. “With three men in London and five in bed, how could we help ourselves?” was Mr Wilton’s reply. As a matter of fact, with the exception of Alex Smith, the Rangers played their strongest available eleven, and as it turned out, it proved more than good enough for the job. An injured heel kept Lennie out of the Aberdeen side. This necessitated Wood going out to the line. Travers crossed over to the inside left berth, and Walker took up the position, which in the ordinary course, would have been occupied by the ex-Clyde and Celtic forward. Despite the miserable weather, the match was a splendid one, and the 2000 or so spectators who risked pneumonia were kept keenly interested up to the close. If goals were that theses enthusiast came to see they got full value for their money. Seven for sixpence is rather a cheap rate I reckon. The first one came within six minutes of the start. Soye flashed across a dropping centre, and a muddle-up in the goal-mouth ended in Milne popping the ball into the net. Rangers, playing with the wind, took a better grip of the game after this. Several times they came within an ace of scoring, but the interval had almost arrived ere Parker got his head to the ball from a corner-kick perfectly placed by young Paterson. This goal added to the confidence of the Rangers. A magnificent run by Paterson ending in a brilliant goal by Hogg, signalised the opening of the second half. Three minutes later, the Rangers had lost their lead, a mistake by Hempsey giving Milne his opportunity. Fifteen minutes from the close Goodwin again put the Ibrox men in front; Paterson followed with a pretty fourth one; and Campbell, from a penalty kick, completed the rout. I was particularly pleased with the display made by the Rangers’ younger players. Indeed, in my opinion, it was their virility and eagerness that made the victory so complete. Aberdeen looked the more solid side, but they lacked that extra little bit of ‘go’ possessed by Rangers. Davidson, Wilson and McConnell were only very moderate halves, and as a consequence more than a fair share of the work was thrown on Colman and Hannah. The International back was very safe. Hannah also did splendidly, and King got little chance of saving any of the goals. Soye and Travers, I though, were their best forwards. Montgomery, evidently suited by the ground, played pretty and useful football, his side-slipping and passing forward being most accurate. Goodwin and Paterson who received much assistance from Logan, came out of their shells in the second half. If a trifle too eager, Parker was ever dangerous, but Hogg is still far from being the player he was last season. Logan, at times was a sort of a sixth forward, was the best of the Ibrox intermediate players, although Brown also did well. Campbell was easily the better back. Ormonde did not impress favourably. His kicking was less praiseworthy than usual, and his tackling showed little improvement on recent showings.
