Match Trivia
These teams met at Ibrox Park before 3000 spectators. Abercorn kicked off aginst the wind. Getting possession, the Rangers at once assumed the offensive, and without much effort they obtained a corner kick. H McCreadie took the kick, which he placed well and McPherson lying handy cleverly shot the first goal for the ‘light blues’. At this stage the rain came down in torrents, and both teams left the field. After 10 minutes absence they reappeared. Abercorn took up the running, but Tait stopped their progress. The Rangers right wing got off with the ball, and passing well McPherson was enabled to notch a second point. A minute later Kerr nearly had another goal, but the ball went wide. Nettled at their reveres, the Abercorn pit on a spurt, and transferred play to the other end, Wallace and Nicol putting in some good work. Raeside had a chance, but instead of shooting he foolishly passed to Bonar. All they got was a couple of fruitless corners. McPherson then started a run. He got past several of his opponents, and passed to Kerr, who made tracks to goal. Just as he was looking dangerous A Cuthbertson stepped in, and play was once more at the other end. Muir conceded a corner, but nothing came of it. Immediately afterwards Wallace nearly scored, Haddow just managing to clear his lines, but by a brilliant effort McLung got the visitors their first goal. Duff was then called upon to save from Fraser. He got the ball away, but Fraser returned, and Duff tried to stop it. He missed his kick and the ball rolled slowly through. Even play followed, till H McCreadie successfully passed A Cuthbertson, and when challenged by D Cuthbertson, sent the ball to Fraser who easily scored a fourth goal for the Rangers. Halftime sounded shortly after, with the result – Rangers 4 goals: Abercorn 1 goal. After a short interval the game was resumed, the Rangers having the breeze against them. After some give-and-take play the Abercorn assumed the aggressive. A shot from Hubbard struck the bar and went over. Play became very slow till McPherson got away with the ball. He passed the opposing halves, and then gave the ball to Kerr, who with a long low shot beat Duff for the fifth time. A corner for the Rangers followed, but Fraser sent the ball behind. The Abercorn strove hard to improve their position, but they could not break down the Rangers defence. Settling down once more, the Rangers obtained a sixth goal, Fraser doing the needful. The Abercorn retaliated, and Wallace scored a second goal for them. Towards the close each goal was assailed in turn, but no further scoring took place. Final result – Rangers 6 goals: Abercorn 2 goals.
