Match Trivia
Before about 200 spectators, this League engagement took place at Ibrox. About five minutes behind the advertised time the teams appeared. Crawford substituted N Smith for the Rangers and King was at back vice Colligan for the visitors. At the start the Paisley club showed up well, and gave indications that they did not mean to allow their formidable opponents to run up a 9 –2 score, as they had done in the former League match at Underwood. For the first ten minutes Dickie had certainly a more lively time of it than Traynor, and with a little better shooting the League bottomers would have had at least one goal to their credit. Their finishing however was very erratic on the whole. About ten minutes from the start Traynor in attempting to kick out a low moderately swift shot from A Smith entirely missed the ball, and the first goal came the way of the Rangers. The ‘Light Blues’ now steadied up, and began to bewilder their visitors in truly cat-and-mouse fashion, Miller and Low particularly indulging in some very accurate close passing. Only 15 minutes of the game had gone when Turnbull smartly headed No. 2 for his side. The remainder of the first half was mostly in favour of the ground team, whose easy-going style of play showed the light in which they regarded the match. About five minutes from the interval Hyslop enlivened matters by a brilliant individual effort finishing up with a swift low shot which Traynor could not get at, although he flung himself flat in his endeavour to save. A minute or two later Abercorn were some what encouraged by Scoring a goal from a free kick, Reid slipping the ball past Dickie. The opening of the second period was similar to that of the first. Hyslop latterly again electrified the crowd by a brilliant single-handed run. Securing the ball about midfield he careered along at a tremendous speed, circumventing all opposition, and only parted with the ball when about three yards from Traynor, who had no chance to save. Turnbull had a fifth and Hyslop a sixth from a penalty. Result :- Rangers six; Abercorn one. All the winners played in fine style, although it was evident they were not stressing themselves. Traynor (goal) and Marshall at half were most noticeable for the visitors.
