Match Trivia

For pluck alone Raith Rovers deserved the point withheld from Rangers at stark’s Park yesterday afternoon; had they enjoyed just a little bit of luck they might have had both. Rangers were by no means on their usual game – such displays never took any team to the Scottish Cup final. Their forwards were held by a virile but handicapped set of defenders, and the defence was hard pressed on many occasions. If the Ibrox fellows thought that Raith’s early dash would fizzle out they were disillusioned. Instead, as the game progressed the Kirkcaldy crowd, possessed apparently of inexhaustible energy, became more and amore menacing, and it looked as if at any minute the Rangers’ rear might crack. Barton Raith’s right back, inured in the first half, returned. But he ‘swung out time’ forward on the right, where he was comparatively harmless. Dorrans did well as a deputy defender – never once did Alan Morton get a gilt-edged cross in front of Page’s posts. Galloway and Turner were the star performers. Their understanding and foraging were unrivalled. Had the Rovers had a centre forward possessed of some initiative they must have counted. Pigg missed several scoring chances. In a fairly even first half, Raith made up for any inferiority in footwork by determination. Gray and Hamilton experienced most of their troubles in the second half, however – temper crept in towards the close and the play suffered accordingly. Yet for the most part as a spectacle the game was all that could be desired. Over eight thousand people enjoyed the fare and were satisfied with the result. The Fifers lasted the pace much better – and even in the last minute they came very near to pocketing the second point.
