Match Trivia
Considerably over 20,000 spectators witnessed this tie, which was played on Hampden Park. So great indeed was the interest in the tie that the gates had to be closed early to prevent the park being overcrowded. N Smith was replaced in the Rangers side by Crawford, and forward Hyslop was out, the management laying Low in his place. McColl was absent from the Queen’s on account of injury, and Wilson was played in centre. There was very little wind, and it came from the westward. The Queen’s Park won the toss, and the Rangers kicked off from the Polmadie end sharp on time. Crawford luckily stopped the Queen’s left, and half a minute later Gillespie vigorously tackled McPherson. W Stewart with Drummond on him shot weakly past, and then Dickie and Drummond has enough to do to save nice long shots. A straggling breakaway by the Ibrox five was easily stopped, and a little later D Stewart and Gillespie stopped Low and McPherson by kicking out. Irons gave away the corner in bringing up Miller, and then Lambie almost headed through. So far the Hampden forwards had been liveliest, but in front of Dickie their luck had been awful. Play ruled slacker for a time, but after some tricky work the Rangers right got down, and McPherson opened the Ibrox account half-an-hour from the start. The Queen’s left air were fairly beating their pair of the opposition, but Drummond was very safe, and there was no getting nearer Dickie. From a finely judged pass Low ran clean away from Stewart and Gillespie, and his centre was netted without much ado by Hamilton ten minutes from the interval. Lambie beat Crawford and shot across, but W Stewart could not reach the pass, and Drummond brought up Stewart by kicking out. From a free kick, just on the interval, Drummond gave away a corner to Stewart, which the Rangers cleared, but Gillespie got his foot in and let Stewart have another chance. He passed across to Lambie, who with only seconds to go headed the first goal for Hampden, amidst loud cheers. At the interval the score was – Rangers 2 goals: Queen’s Park 1 goal. On resuming, Gibson stopped Lambie, but on the other wing Butler ran past Mitchell only to be brought up by Drummond. McPherson was injured in collision with Gillespie, but recovered quickly, and open play succeeded for a spell. Play ruled slightly in favour of the Ibrox team, but the Hampden halves were persistent, and kept the opposing forwards out. Wilson had a rare chance through a mistake of Crawford, but nobody was up, and then the Rangers got to the other end, where after Anderson mulled an easy shot, Miller scored a third goal ten minutes after the resumption. The Ibrox forwards showed something of their old form now, and were always dangerous. The Queen’s pressed, and in as many minutes forced four corners, from the last of which Ritchie shot over. A corner at Gillespie’s end was cleared, but play remained in Hampden quarters, and Anderson saved from McPherson giving away a corner in the process. Nothing came of the try, and both ends were visited fruitlessly. Hamilton, yards offside, shot through and the point was disallowed, and a minute later a free kick was given against Gillespie for fouling Hamilton, Smith shooting on to the net. From a pass of Wilson, Berry just missed, and at Anderson’s end Low headed past. Low with a rare chance, shot past, and was injured in collision with Anderson, the game being stopped for a minute, Dickie gave away a corner, and Gibson another, but nothing came, and at the other end Low shot past. Rangers had all the play until the close. The result was – Rangers 3: Queen’s Park 1.
