Match Trivia
Still without J Blair and Davie McLean Rangers got through comfortably against a clever enough Queen’s Park team which, however, never looked like winning. Although A Stevenson and Andy Ford Put up a sound defence, they contributed to the loss of the goals by failing to give ‘Ward’ the protection he was entitled to. Forward, the Amateurs exhibited quite smart footwork, but without exception they made the grievous mistake of trying to do single-handed what they can only be done by combination. This, of course, was merely playing into the hands of the Ibrox rear-guard, who were seldom in serious trouble. For the cleverer winners, none did better than ex-Hampdenites Peter Purcell, James Bowie and Willie Aitken. The half-back is playing better than ever this season. Bowie’s short forward passes were things of beauty, and Aitken’s centres were always dangerous. It was from one of these latter that their camouflaged centre headed the opening goal five minutes before the interval; and as many after the ‘breather,’ Cairns completed the account from another of the same. The better play and keener contest was seen in the earlier stages, during which the Amateurs made a plucky but futile fight.
