Match Trivia

It was admitted to be rather an unfortunate circumstance that two crack clubs like Queen’s Park and Rangers should have been drawn together at such an early period of the season as in the second round of the Challenge Cup before they had got into their proper working order. The match however which came off on the ground of the senior club Hampden Park gave the numerous spectators some 6,000 in number an opportunity of witnessing a splendid contested game with almost an entirely new generation of players representing both clubs. Indeed the old frequenters of Hampden Park must have been completely puzzled in their efforts to pick out familiar faces particularly on the Queen’s Park side, and about the half of the twenty-two players who faced each other on the field were only known to their club companions and the initiated. On the Queen’s Park side G Ker and A Holm were the chief absentees while the Rangers wanted R Young and J Gossland (the latter of whom had already played for another club in a cup tie). The ground was in the best of trim for the game and with the exception of a slight shower and some wind, which made the air somewhat chilly the afternoon was quite favourable for football. If allowance is made on both sides for a little inexperience necessary observed among young members when coolness and discretion are indispensable the play on the whole may be characterised as very fair and although there was an absence of that neat and judicious tackling among the backs in front of goal there were certainly several very fine runs and smart passing among the forwards. The Rangers had decidedly the best of the first round and succeeded in scoring a couple of goals to the Queen’s Park one, but for some time in the second when the senior club got two they had in addition several capital chances of increasing their record, but carelessness in front of goal prevented any additions. Although the Queen’s Park had two goals to nothing in the second round it is not for a moment to be supposed that the Hampden Park club had it all their own way, far from it. The Rangers had several capital combined runs up to their senior’s goal and all but scored. As time wore on the Queen’s ark seemed determined to keep what they had got in goals and the backs played the safe game of ‘kicking out’ when such was considered necessary. The Queen’s Park began the contest by kicking off against the wind and for some time the play was rather open for a cup tie – the respective players apparently feeling their way and testing the abilities of opponents. The younger club were the first to get behind the Queen’s Park lines with the ball but after a good run by McArthur and his companion on the left (McInnes), the former got in among the Rangers backs and scored a very lucky, though clever gaol in about fourteen minutes from the start. The Rangers were at it soon after the ball again left midfield and Inglis and Robertson made a fine run up the centre of the field but the latter lost the best chance to score which occurred on his side during the whole match. After this the Queen’s Park by Fraser and Anderson were close on the Rangers lines but the ball was well returned by Vallance and a fine run by the forwards brought the leather fairly in front of the Queen’s Park goal, where a determined scrimmage ended in the Rangers forcing the ball between the posts. This made the game equal and as soon as the kick off again occurred the Rangers crowded round the Queen’s Park goal with renewed energy; but hard kicking and smart tackling by Arnott was done at the proper time and although the leather from a shot by Duncan hit the goal bar it was eventually sent clear by Wallace and the goal saved. Not long before half time however the Rangers again came down on the Queen’s Park lines and McIntyre getting the ball after it came out of the scrimmage made a good hard shot. One of the backs and the goalkeeper seemed perfectly aware that the ball was coming near them and through some cause or other none of them seemed to get near enough and it went clean under the goal amid great cheering. In the second half the Queen’s Park playing with the wind in their favour, soon made their presence felt at the Rangers posts, and McInnes all but got the ball under. A corner flag kick resulted and after some lively work in front of the goal one of the defenders fouled the ball and the Queen’s Park were awarded a free kick. Gow managed the ball so smartly that it seemed to touch one of the players and went between the posts thus equalising the game. The Rangers appealed for ‘no goal’ on the plea that the ball had touched nobody before going through, but the referee allowed the score as fairly earned. The Rangers made good work of the next start from the centre of the field and before the ball was returned Robertson and Hamilton had a couple of shots at the Queen’s Park stronghold without effect. The play however was soon transferred to the other end of the field and after a dashing bit of heading and assign in front of the Rangers goal, the Queen’s Park succeeded in making a third record amid loud cheering. McInnes after this lost an easy chance for the Queen’s Park and so did Pringle on behalf of the Rangers; but no more goals were added when time was called, and the Queen’s Park thus won a closely contested game by three goals to two. It is stated that the Rangers have lodged a protest as to the validity of the second goal scored by the Queen’s Park.
