Match Trivia
Played at Hampden Park before 15,000 spectators. The Queens’ lost the toss, and Christie started the game against the breeze and with a strong sun in their eyes. Rangers took matters in hand, and Hyslop had a shot, which went past. A bout between D Stewart and Low was the next feature of the game, and again the Queen’s man had the best of it. Coming away in a body Christie led the Queen’s forwards ahead, and N Smith in clearing fouled the ball. The free kick was stopped by Mitchell, but McFarlane returned to Butler, who headed across the goal, Lambie got his foot on the ball and popped it into the net. First goal for Queen’s Park. The ground men continued to press, and Lambie forced a corner, bit it came to nothing. Pulling themselves together the Rangers made some progress to the opposite end, where Low and Gillespie had a bout, with honours equal. A corner for the Rangers was no use to them. The Queen’s were playing a grand game. Irons excelling in clever tackling and placing. Rangers had a look in, but score they could not. Lambie and Smith were having some rare tussles at the one end, while Low and Gillespie were busy at the other. Neither could gain much advantage. Towards halftime the Rangers made strenuous efforts to score. They got a couple of corners, but both were fruitless. A third corner followed, which also proved fruitless. Halftime result – Queen’s Park 1: Rangers 0. After the interval the Rangers again took the game in hand. They were full of running and clustered round the Queen’s goal. Low had a try, which went behind. This was followed by Rangers getting a free kick just outside the 12-yard line; Glen in clearing gave away a corner, which however was unproductive. Butler and W Stewart were eager for work on the Queen’s right, and a pass by McFarlane enabled them to get away. They carried the ball right to the other end, where Butler had a shot, which just went over. From the goal kick the Rangers got well away. They put in some rare combined work, which took the Queen’s by surprise. Score however they could not. McPherson had a clear opening, but he shot far over the bar. From a free kick, the Queen’s transferred the play to the other end, but Dickie caught the ball and cleared in grand style. A corner for the Rangers was taken by Hyslop, but McFarlane got it clear. A free kick for Rangers was the next feature. The ball was returned by N Smith from back, had a long shot, which went into goal, thus equalising the score. Now came the pull. A corner for the Queen’s looked well, but Christie shot past. The Queen’s were pushing hard for a lead again. Time after time they gave Dickie as mush as he could do. At the other end the Rangers in their eagerness missed a clear goal. Result – A draw, one goal each.
