Match Trivia
Queen’s Park met with a glorious defeat against Rangers at Hampden Park last night. I say ‘glorious’ because it took Rangers 41 minutes to get on equal terms with the Amateurs, and 68 to get in the lead. As a combination, the Ibrox fellows were superior, but the young fellow of Hampden made up for any deficiency in this connection by their whole-heartedness, vim and determination. So much so that I venture to say that had Rangers’ defence been subjected to the onslaught which the ‘QP’ rear guard had to del with for half of the second half they would have crumpled up. Gibbs and his colleagues refused to budge an inch. There was plenty of go in front, too. Therefore, I was not a bit surprised when Jamie Crawford cottoned on to a swinging pass from Moreland beat McCandless all ends up, and going in on outcoming Robb, neatly slipped the ball into his net. It was a clever effort, and – let me whisper this – the Rangers became rattled. For a bit they were not a good combination, but they settled down again, and Archibald, Tommy Cairns, Alan Morton and Andy Cunningham all had repeated tries. But Andy’s new boots appeared to have turned-up toes – he generally lofted his shots, and those he kept low were got rid off by the never-say-die defenders. Forward, Queen’s Park were far from idle. McAlpine grazed the bar with a rake, but on the 41st minute Archibald let out at a very ‘heady’ slip from Henderson, and nearly burst the back of Gibbs’ net with a ball that glanced off somebody’s legs. Early in the second half Gibbs defied Meiklejohn to improve upon a penalty granted for Archibald being ‘downed’. After this we saw the Rangers at their best, and in 23 minutes Cunningham lashed a ball into the net to give Ibrox the lead. Not till then did QP look a beaten team, and their fate was sealed when Cunningham put on the Rangers third five minutes before the finish. Every man gave of his very best, and this I will say, Manderson was not missed – no offence, Bert. Moreland is to the light side for centre-forward berth, and Nicholson is still a trifle too inexperienced for First League football, but his day will come. Meiklejohn missed a second half penalty
