Match Trivia
The closing fixture of the Glasgow League was played off last night on Hamden Park between these clubs, and attracted an attendance of fully 4000, the ground was very heavy, but notwithstanding the game was stubbornly contested. Neither team was at their full strength, but Hyslop, late of Stoke reappeared in the Rangers, and managed to score two of the goals. The game had not long been started before Hyslop scored for the Rangers, McColl putting on the equaliser shortly afterwards. The play considering the ground, was full of life, and some pretty forwards play on the part of the Queen’s gave Dickie some trouble, but they could not get the ball through. Drummond for the Rangers and Templeton for the home lot both distinguished themselves when danger threatened, the Queen’s man repeatedly nipping the ball away in splendid fashion. Wilkie added a second for the Rangers, but this lead they did not have long, as a penalty against them allowed McColl to score the equaliser. The Queen’s after this played a beautiful game, and in the last ten minutes of this half they kept the Rangers very busy, McColl, Berry and Wilson almost scoring. At the interval the game stood 2 goals each. The second half had not long been started when the Rangers forwards got away, and Campbell added a third goal, Hyslop putting on another ten minutes later. With 2 goals against them the Queen’s wakened up, and Wilson and Stewart repeatedly looked dangerous. However from a pretty pass by Berry, W Stewart scored a well-taken goal, and play after this became faster. The Rangers were more dangerous at goal and several times Lawrence got some nasty shots to deal with all of which he managed to get away successfully. In the last few minutes of the game the Queen’s tried hard to get the equaliser, but Smith and Drummond always sent them to the right about, while Campbell and Wilkie repeatedly looked as if they would add to the Rangers score. There was no further scoring, and the Rangers won by 4 goals to 3. For the Rangers Smith, Drummond, Campbell, Wilkie and Hamilton were the best; while of the Queen’s Templeton and all the forwards were prominent.
