Match Trivia

Queen’s Park and Rangers with the city practically to themselves, played a friendly on Hampden Park. Rangers won the toss, and Stewart started for the home team against the breeze. The Rangers had the better of the opening exchanges, wearing down the defence and forcing a couple of corners. Nothing came of them. The Queen’s Park wakened up a bit, and from a pass from the left Waddell scored ten minutes from the start. Queen’s Park pressed severly for a spell, but beyond corners of which they had a couple gained nothing. A free kick against Drummond for tripping D Stewart let the Queen’s Park in again, but the advantage was not improved. At halftime the score was – Queen’s Park 1: Rangers nil. On the re-start, Queen’s Park resumed the pressure, and Lambie and D Stewart just missed by inches. A free kick against Drummond however, for fouling Start, let them in, and Waddell smartly scored in the scrimmage, which followed. A few minutes later Stark just missed by inches. The Rangers had a spell of pressing, the forwards lying well in on Anderson, and from a free kick by Mitchell, Cowan scored amidst cheers. Playing more confidently the Rangers pressed, and Barker scored the equalising point. Gillespie came into collision with Barker, and was hurt so severly that he had to retire. With ten men the Hampden team more than held its own for a time, D Stewart forcing a corner, which Start put right into Montgomery’s hands. A foul against Barker for tripping Waddell, who now played vice Gillespie, looked like bringing something, but Drummond cleared, and hard but not too class play in midfield followed. After the Queen’s had pressed severly, and been rewarded with very hard lines, Cowan got well away, and his centre, which was very finely judged was headed through by Boyd. A few minutes later a fourth goal followed for the Rangers, Boyd heading through after a brilliant run. The light blues improved in play as their opponents declined, something like the old indifference characterising the amateurs’ play. A fine run by Lambie wakened his colleagues up a little, but it went for nothing, and a hard if not very brilliant game ended – Rangers 4 goals: Queen’s Park 2 goals.
