Match Trivia

There never seemed any real danger of Rangers losing, especially after Henderson banged home a Morton cross after nine minutes play. Once on the lead against the breeze, the Ibrox fellows were chock-full of confidence, and their toying tactics rather spoiled the game; yet the Amateurs were by no means outplayed. Indeed, throughout the first half the ball was oftener at Robb’s end, although Willie was seldom stretched. Once Moreland tested him with a ‘header’, and a clever Crawford run, and centre put Reid and McCandless in ‘Queer Street’ momentarily. Shooting, however, was not a ‘QP’ feature. More solid and finely led by Henderson, who essayed several solo efforts, the Rangers frequently menaced Gibbs’ charge, and Sneddon and Wiseman were none too happy when pressed. On crossing over the ‘Light Blues’ were more ‘cocky’ than ever, and the Amateurs had to be content with fugitive raids. Then a Hampden misfortune – fifteen minutes after the restart, Eddy Scott was carried off with a leg injured in a tackle with Muirhead. That finished Eddy for the day. A glorious chance for the equaliser fell to Moreland, but he shot across the goal. Later Crawford brought Robb to his knees with a hard drive. Although pressing almost continuously the Rangers did not touch their usual standard; combination was sacrificed on the alter of individualism. Craig and Henderson made many tried, but until three minutes before the close they were kept out. Then Henderson beat Gibb with a rising ball. Thrills were entirely absent, and the majority of the 10,000 or so spectators must have been glad when the end came. Both sides were disappointing. Queen’s Park’s middle was their best division, with McDonald the most effective of the trio. Kirkwood made a tip-top appearance in the Rangers’ middle, but Reid made a rather indifferent substitute for Manderson
