Match Trivia

Last season Port Glasgow had a trying time with injured players, and they are once again early in difficulties, two of their men being in the wars on Saturday. What promised to be a rousing struggle to the finish was thus completely spoiled as in the end the Rangers simply romped home. With the sun behind, and favoured with a strong wind the ‘Light Blues’ started with a big advantage, but notwithstanding this, the Port were the first to become dangerous. When the Rangers got settled they certainly showed themselves to be the superior side, but reckless shooting and the opposition’s determined tackling kept them out. Nearing the interval the Port made a strong bid, and after good combination on the right Ross beat Newbigging. Within a minute the game was again level, Lynch being unfortunate to head the ball through his own goal from a corner. With the advantage of the elements the Port Glasgow looked to have a chance of points, but in the first minute they lost Ruddiman, who was badly hurt in contact with Gordon, and took no further part in the game. Afterwards the game went in favour of the Rangers. Campbell headed a second point, and then further disaster befell the home team, as Lynch had to retire with a twisted knee. It was not surprising that after this the game degenerated into the farcical. Ross put the ball through his own goal, and Campbell added another, while Livingstone had two, the game ending in an easy win for the Light Blues. The strong part of the Rangers team was the middle line, May especially being prominent at centre half. The forwards of whom Livingstone was about best, did well in the open, but were well held so long as the Port were at full strength, and it may be noted that they failed to score, at all until their opponents were short-handed. The defence did not inspire confidence, both Jackson and Craig being fluky under pressure. The losers deserve praise for their gallant fight under difficulties. Grieve kept a good goal despite the score, and had done splendid saves in the first half. The outstanding man in the team was Ross, who was not far from being the best player in the field. While the forwards did well enough in the first half, the want of Ruddiman in the latter portion completely upset them, and they were seldom dangerous. Notwithstanding the heavy score the Port is a vast improvement on last year’s lot
