Match Trivia

This Scottish tie was played on the ground of the Thistle at Inchview, Whiteinch, the wind was from the east, and bitterly cold, but otherwise the conditions were favourable. Great interest was taken in the encounter, the enclosure being well packed at the start. Rangers won the toss, but this did not give them any material advantage, as any wind there was blew across the field. A foul off MacDonald resulted in the Ibrox men scoring the first goal of the game seven minutes from the start. Shortly after the Rangers were penalised, and from the free kick Lawson shot wide. The Thistle were working hard to retrieve their position, and after a smart run Lawson equalised the game. Directly after this the Light Blues raised the siege, and the Thistle defence was hard pressed. A foul was given them close in, and Mitchell tipping the ball to Gibson, that player notched the Rangers second goal. The Inchview men could rarely get away, and their backs were sorely pressed. Currie on the Thistle left received an injury, and had to retire. At last the Thistle broke away, and were looking dangerous when Drummond intercepted a pass and once more the Rangers were busy round Spence. The Rangers at this time were playing a brilliant game, and after repeated attacks Hyslop found an opening, the goalkeeper having no chance. Halftime result – Rangers 3: Partick Thistle 1. When the game was resumed there would be fully 6000 present. Currie was able to turn out again, and received an ovation. After some midfield play Hyslop sent in a shot, which was wide, and then an unproductive corner fell to the Rangers. After this the Thistle goal was subjected to severe pressing, and it was extraordinary how it escaped downfall. Spence put in some really fine work. A penalty kick was awarded the Thistle, and Proudfoot netted the ball. The Rangers now wakened up, and time after time the Thistle goal was in danger. Disaster was averted by the splendid defence of Spence and his backs. A couple of runs by both teams kept play lively, but produced no goals. Success at length came to the Rangers, Hyslop scoring with a shot, which Spence could not stop. The result was – Rangers 4 goals: Partick Thistle 2 goals
