Match Trivia
Long after the kick-off at Firhill, Glasgow on Saturday the crowd kept pouring into the enclosure, and the holding capacity of Partick Thistle’s new field was thoroughly tested. The play was worthy of the occasion, and the spectators did not fail to show their appreciation of the efforts of the players. The moment Hunter (for the Rangers) set the ball a-rolling the enthusiasm of the crowd was manifested, a free-kick to the Thistle just outside Rangers’ penalty area delighting the home supporters, while a spirited dash by Miller and Reid pleased the Ibrox men. Callaghan retaliated by carrying the ball past the ‘Light Blues’ defence right up to the touch-line, but he finished by sending the ball behind. A spell of defensive play on the part of the visitors was put to an end by Hogg, who passed neatly to Bennett, and Gardiner beat Law and sent the ball to the centre, but the pass was not turned to advantage. A pass by Hogg to Reid was followed by a show which Howden cleared capitally, and Parry got in Bennett’s way just in time to save a certain goal. Rangers were now doing the bulk of the pressing, but they found the Thistle defence invulnerable, and Howden saved several fine shots very cleverly, a risky rush out to meet Hogg resulting in a momentary stoppage of the game. Callaghan at length raised the siege, and till half-time the play was more evenly distributed. Lock proved as clever and daring as Howden, and had a really great save from Callaghan. The second half opened in Thistle’s favour, but Rangers did not remain long on the defensive. They made valiant efforts to score, and Hogg missed a glorious chance. Spirited raids and rallies kept the spectators excited, and Lock’s goal underwent several narrow escapes, the Englishman showing splendid nerve at critical moments. Strive as they might, neither side could score, and a fast exciting game ended in a draw
