Match Trivia
To the extent that Partick Thistle pulled up from three down at the interval to one down at the finish, Firhill lived up to its reputation recently in grave danger if being lost for providing something out of the way. At half-time, Thistle seemed completely out of it, and Rangers held a commanding lead after a not very inspiring 45 minutes. But it we were disappointed with the fare during that period, it was satisfying enough afterwards. Thistle made a real game of it in the second half, scored three goals to Rangers one, and sent the crowd home happy. That two of the goals were scored from free kicks detracted only slightly from Thistles performance. In both cases McAllister was the scorer, and his tearing grounders from the standing ball were things to marvel at. The line of defenders drawn up to cover the goal hampered rather than helped Dawson, for he was late in getting a sight of the ball too late to have a chance to save. He had no chance, either with Priors glorious shot, when the Thistle forwards took a cross from the left in his stride and banged the ball into the net at great speed. McAllisters goals came in the third and the last minutes of the second half, In between the first and Priors came Rangers fourth scored by Stevenson after Fleming had bored through the defence and had a shot saved. In the first half, Main started the scoring. There was a mix-up near the Thistle goal and the ball dropped in front of Main, almost on the goal-line, from a defenders head, to be jabbed through just in time. Rangers second goal was a curious affair. Two defenders were looking after Marshall, and they stopped him, but the ball ran on, leaving Fleming an easy chance, of which he took full advantage. Just after this Brown had a pop, and found his luck in, for Gourlay reached the ball but could not stop it, and it bounced off the goalkeepers hands into the net. As a team, Rangers were more impressive, and they were well worth their win. Dawson, Gray and Simpson stood out in defence, though the centre-half gave away too many free-kicks. All the forwards did well, even Gillick, who was played in his first game out of position. Gourlay did not inspire confidence in the thistle goal. He was slow after the ball, and not sure in his handling. Cumming was another who did not shine, and Main worried him into making mistakes. McAllister was a powerful defender, and Thistle had a hard-working half-back line. The forwards gave only occasional glimpses of combined work, and it was on their superiority in this department that Rangers deserved to win
