Match Trivia
Meadowside, the Partick Thistle’s new enclosure, was opened last night, when the local team met the Rangers in a friendly. The evening the dull was threatening, but notwithstanding there was a capital attendance, nearly 7000 being present. The Knightswood Brass Band was in attendance; County Councillor Green performed the opening ceremony, and kicked off the ball amidst applause. Play at once became interesting, both goals being visited in turn. The Thistle were first to become really dangerous, a fine shot from Ferguson going over. Back again came the Rangers, Hyslop and Hamilton each having shots blocked. The game was being fought on even lines. More pressing by the Partick men was followed by a nice run on the Rangers left. When looking dangerous A Smith was given offside. The light blues were soon again at the Thistle end, and Spence saved a very hard shot from A Smith. At the other end Gray was next conspicuous, a spurt shot from that player almost beating Dickie, who had difficulty in clearing. A second shot from Lawson produced a corner, but nothing resulted. Twenty minutes from the start Neil scored with a long shot. The Rangers thus secured the first goal on the new ground – an honour the home team would have liked: and they might have had it, if they had seized an opportunity they got shortly after the start. Good work by the Ibrox front line got a corner, which Low did not improve upon. Time after time the Thistle attacked, but effort were not combined enough to be effective against such able opponents. Lawson shot wide, and then the Rangers made a capital attack, Spence falling full length in order to save a shot from Hyslop. Play slackened down a bit before halftime, when the score was – Rangers 1: Thistle 0. On resuming hostilities the Rangers started off at a brisk pace, and without stopping Hamilton netted the ball. The game was no sooner restated than the same player repeated the trick, Spence having no chance. Undaunted by these reverses, and in response to the shouts of their supporters, the home team worked the ball down, Dickie saving a hot shot from Gray. Play continued in the Rangers quarters for a few minutes, but no score could be affected. After a bit of pressing, A Smith put the Rangers four up. Relief came to the Thistle, but it was momentary, Neil being on the alert for any breakaway. A couple of corners were now credited the Rangers, still without benefit. From a foul at close quarters the Thistle were successful. The visitors again took matters in hand, and McPherson found an opening. The result was – Rangers 5 goals: Partick Thistle 1 goal.
