Match Trivia

In fulfilment of an arrangement made at the close season, when Notts as holder of the Association Cup, met Glasgow Rangers who had at that time possession of the Scottish and Glasgow Cups, at Glasgow, a friendly game between the two teams was played today upon the Town Ground, Nottingham, which had been very kindly laced at the disposal of the Notts executive by the committee of the Forest Club. The Southern tour of the Rangers had already produced two capital victories, over Everton by four goals to none, and Aston Villa by three goals to two respectively, but the effect of these results was somewhat discounted by the fast that neither of the English clubs were well represented. The fixture today was, nevertheless of an extremely attractive nature, and with the continuance of the glorious weather of the last few days a large gate and a pleasant game were confidently anticipated. The Rangers brought a repetitive eleven, but Notts had bye no means their full strength, Hendry, Bramley, Bruce and Allsopp being all absent. There were 5,000 spectators when McKay started the game, the visitors having the advantage of a powerful wind, which blew towards the Wilford lane goal. The Scotchmen early attacked, but Shelton and Stothart in turn cleared from the right wing. The Notts forwards, by dint of extremely pretty work, soon brought relief, but Chadburn fouled the ball. Boyd shot wide, and McCreadie sent into the side net. Then Chadburn and Garrett got away, but from the formers centre Drummond kicked away. Then Garrett robbed Gibson, and passed cleverly to Chadburn. The Notts outside right sped down the wing, and centred to Allen, who with a flying shot, scored for Notts after nine minutes play. Coles then luckily stopped Boyd who was getting well through, but a corner accrued to the visitors. They made no use of this, and Chadburn relieved, finishing up with a capital centre, which Haddow had to clear smartly. Cowan ran round Stothart and centred and McCreadie looked a certain scorer. Coles came to the rescue however, and the attack came to nothing. Coles showed a good turn of speed, but although he stopped Boyd and Smith the Rangers maintained the attack, and for two to three minutes was hotly besieged. Notts showed a resolute defence, however and Bull breaking away brought about a change in the venue of the ply. The latter shot well, but the wind diverted the ball from the goal, and Chadburn was unable to get to it. The Notts outside right receiving from Allan ran round Drummond, but his final shot was a foot or two too high. The Notts forwards showed very considerable improvement upon recent display, but Crawford stopped a dangerous rush. The Rangers were quickly round Toone, and McCreadie struck the post with a clever shot, McKay sending over from the rebound. Toone handled for the first time in the game a long dropping shot from Gibson, and both McCreadie and Gibson shot over the bar of the Notts goal. The Rangers were pressing strongly, but their shooting was very much at fault. Toone had several times to handle, but there was nothing about the shots, and although the visitors were playing a pretty and resolute game they failed to make any appreciable impression upon the Notts defence until Cowan forced a corner. He placed it well in front of goal, and both Boyd and Gibson appeared likely to score. Stothart and Coles however cleared the Notts lines, and the whole of the Notts forwards participated in a clever run the length of the field. They were stopped by Crawford, who put in a big kick, and Stothart, who was playing a brilliant game, relieved with an equally meritorious effort. Drummond was again to the fore, but Toone judged very nicely, and got rid of smartly a long and awkward shot from his foot. Again the Notts defence came successfully out of a trying ordeal, and effective work by the whole of the front rank enabled Brealey to force a corner. Notts kept up the attack, there form, but Haddow disposed of a capital effort by Coles. Allan, who had been playing a pretty game in the centre, was applauded for more excellent work, but Crawford got in the way of his pass to Brealey. Drummond was penalised for tripping Allan, and from the free kick Bull nearly headed through a second point for his side. Haddow was on the alert, however and although the Notts inside left got the ball again he shot over the bar. When Brealey was fed he completely beat Crawford, and finished with a shot which only just missed scoring a piece of work which gained for him a hearty round of applause. Brealey was hurt in a charge with Marshall, and left the field having sustained a broken collarbone. Up to halftime the ball remained in the Notts territory. Halftime – Notts 1: Glasgow Rangers 0. After the interval Notts had still only ten men. Calderhead shot in finely, and Haddow in fisting away played the ball on to the bar, and it was very clear that it had gone through, but he got rid of the rebound smartly, and the referee disallowed a strenuous appeal for a goal. Cowan was penalised for pushing Allan, but the free kick availed Notts nothing. The visitors got well away, and although Coles and Stothart stopped them they speedily returned and obtained a corner. From this Toone was very busy, and although he had nearly all the Glasgow forwards around him he saved amid loud cheers. Bull and Allan dashed away, and the former centring the latter was unlucky in not scoring. The Notts left wing returned again, and Garrett and Chadburn each had bad luck with plucky shots. Nothing came of the corner, which accrued, to Notts, but with the wind in their favour they maintained a clever attack, Haddow saving brilliantly a long shot by Allan, which fully deserved to score. The game went at great pace, and although Cowan and McCreadie threatened very seriously, Haslam kicked smartly away when Boyd had only Toone to beat. A judicious pass by Allan to Chadburn let the Notts forwards clear through, but his shot was a trifle too high. Smith made a brilliant run, and Shot in finely, but Toone was not to be beaten, and Notts returned vigorously to the attack. The Rangers speedy outside left was freely fed, but Haslam managed to stop a dangerous rush, which he made. A return by Drummond who was kicking with great power and judgment, gave the visitors a corner kick, from which the ball was shot out just over the to of the goal. Allan at the other end shot a trifle too high, and Haddow had next to handle from Calderhead. All the Rangers forwards went away in a line, but Stothart was too much for Smith, and the Notts forwards were quickly in the Glasgow quarters again. It was another big kick by Drummond, which drove them back, and McKay appeared certain to score when Haslam stopped him, leaving Toone to deal with the ball. He got rid of it effectively, and in the Rangers territory Chadburn caused Haddow to handle, and Coles misdirected. Fouls against Notts for handling in midfield gave another opening to the visitors, but Toone was able to deal with all shots that were put in. Two corners in quick succession fell to the Rangers, who were evidently bent on equalising, but they failed to improve the advantage thus given. Toone made a marvellous save from Boyd and Drummond, who was working hard to improve the position of his side, only just sent past from long range. The wind had dropped somewhat, and the home side had a powerful sun in their face. They once more took up the attack, and Calderhead shot very finely, and Haddow affected a smart save. The Rangers goal next had a remarkable escape, Chadburn striking the crossbar with a hard shot. Garrett made a plucky attempt, and Chadburn sent right across the mouth of the goal, none of the home side being able to reach the ball. McKay obtained possession, but was palpably offside, and the ball remained upon the Rangers side of the halfway line until the visitor’s linesman awarded them a throw in, which should have been given to Notts. Then Smith received, but his shot went wide, and Cowan just afterwards kicked harmlessly over the line. A free kick fell to the visitors close in, but Coles came to the rescue at the critical moment. Cowan next obtained possession, and shot very finely close to the goalmouth, but neither Boyd nor Smith were far enough up to convert his centre. When Calderhead sent in along shot, Drummond in kicking away missed sending through his own goal by inches only. Cowan again got away, and Toone saved his shot in brilliant style, Stothart next heading away when McCreadie returned. Both these efforts received, as they deserved hearty applause, which renewed when Smith with a clear opening, was knocked off the ball by Stothart. Just afterwards he shot into the side of the net. The Rangers made desperate efforts to equalise, and the Notts goal narrowly escaped downfall upon two or three occasions. Drummond and Bull collided, and the latter having previously been hurt in a charge, sustained another injury to his left leg. He was obliged to retire, limping off the field very badly. Notts now had only nine men, but time was called directly after, with the result – Notts 1: Glasgow Rangers 0.
