Match Trivia
The match between these clubs attracted a large gathering of spectators, both placed their full teams on the field. Northern kicked off with great dash, and looked dangerous for a minute or two, but were soon driven back, and three minutes after starting the Rangers put on the first point. The home team had a look in, but the ball was returned immediately, and Gow with a low swift shot, sent the leather between the posts for the second time. Three corners in succession fell to the visitors, but they failed to take advantage of them. Northern wrought steadily up the field, and had two tries, neither of which took effect. The Ibrox men were in fine form and their passing troubled their opponents. After some give and take play, Anderson centred from the left and Robin headed through making three goals for the visitors. Nothing daunted the ground men kept at it, and were rewarded by a fine shot from Robb, which took effect amid great applause. Fortune seemed to turn her face on the Springburn men, for they succeeded in putting on a second mark a few minutes after. This put some life into the play, and both sides tried their utmost to score, but although Northern once or twice made an attempt to equalise, they could not get past Reid and at halftime the scores stood – Rangers 3: Northern 2. On restarting the Rangers assumed the offensive, and quickly scored, Wyllie doing the needful. The home men now carried all before them, but were unable to score, and the ball being transferred D Gow sent in the fifth goal. Mitchell was playing a very good game, but though sending in good shots none wee fatal. The Northern kept up the pressure, and confined the strangers to their own territory, but it taxed their energies to get past the backs. A foul against the Rangers was also fruitless. Thinking themselves safe now they rested, but were suddenly surprised by Watson sending in a third goal. Spurred on by this success the Northern towards the end had by far the best of the game. Allan got clear away, and after a grand run up the left, notched the sixth point. The Northern had hard lines in not scoring, for though keeping up a constant siege every attack was vigorously repulsed, and when time was called the visitors had a majority of three goals, the result being – Rangers 6 goals: Northern 3 goals.
