Match Trivia

One of the finest displays on the part of an English team witnessed in the match at Cathkin Park last night, when Newcastle United routed the Rangers by no less than 5 goals to 0. The Newcastrians in the second half of the game were all over their opponents, their combination being excellent and their general movements as pleasing and as yet accurate as one could wish to see. By contrast the Rangers were very feeble. They opened well, and their all-round play in the first half gave no indication of the subsequent hollow form, which pervaded almost the entire eleven. For the major part the Newcastle team is composed of Scottish players, but they introduced to a Glasgow crowd a left wing forward in the person of Graham of Workington, who bids fair to make a noise in the football world. He is of good height and build, and is natural in his movements. His dribbling was excellent, and his coolness at close quarters against Neil Gibson and Nicol Smith was of exceptional merit. The presence of two ex-Queen’s Park forwards in W Stewart and RS McColl and D Gardner and Peddie, formerly of 3rd Lanark, in the United ranks created much local interest, and the attendance exceeded 4000, the gross takings amounting to £112. Kingsley, the International League goalkeeper was the only absentee on the visiting side from the team published, and Watts took his place. The Rangers had Paterson ex-Glasgow Perthshire and St Mirren, at goal and Knox of Glenbuck at half-back, but neither player was a success, the goalkeeper being nervous and inexperienced and the half-back displaying very moderate form. Peddie got the only goal of the first half somewhat simply about ten minutes from the interval in the second portion goals were put on by Peddie and McColl, the former having three and McColl the other two. The third goal was in McColl’s best style. A long straight drive fully 25 yards out and the crowd cheered again, and again as the players lined up to renew the struggle. All round there was not a weak spot in the winning side. Their defence quite broke up the Rangers ragged attempts, and the forwards played through the Rangers rear lines with refreshing ease and skill. Their passing was all on the ground, and they saved themselves a lot of pointless running by slipping on the ball when a Ranger went in to tackle. The best forward on the field was Ronald Orr, whose touches were delightful to watch. He and Stewart made a sorry exhibition of Knox and Crawford. McColl passed more freely than he was wont to do while associated with Queen’s Park. Without over-exerting himself, he still showed what a brilliant centre he is. Peddie and Graham completed as effective a forward line as we have seen in Glasgow for a long time. Aitken played a conspicuously clever game against RC Hamilton, who shaped like a notice; while Carr and A Gardner were strong on the wings, and Bennie and Gardner were reliable at back – the former excelling. Watts got little to do at goal. All over the Rangers seemed untrained, and recent events have handicapped them to an extent that was painfully reflected in their play. Smith and Neil were the best of the defence, and Speedie the only consistent forward.
